CDL more valuable than a college degree?

Curious minds want to know. Why do you think a 2 year degree is worthless? A 2 year degree opens more doors than a GED any day. At least a person with a 2 year degree understands critical thinking and what that means. They can do basic mathematics. They have made an attempt to better themselves, regardless of the outcome. I don't understand why so many on this site have such a bad distaste for education. I just don't understand it. Please tell me why education, on any level , is a bad thing.

Later edit: Please know that I'm not trying to disrespect anyone, regardless of their education level. I tend to get my feathers ruffled with statements like these.

Surely you don't think he pocketed 12K in one day? How many people does the doctor employ? How large is his operation? What is his overhead? How much did he spend on his education? Sorry X1....can't agree with you on this one. It's kinda like a company driver looking at an owner op and not understanding the math and business expenses involved. In his eyes, the O/O is making bank, which we both know is not always the case.

He employs approximately 6 Nurses, 4 Assistants and about 10 people across several different parts of the clinic he is specifically running. The 12K gross was for the surgeries he did that day. Minus whatever his expenses came out to Which is pretty substantial. Anesthesia took 1800 gross for the entire episode and one specialist for lung breathing machine for about a thousand dollars a hour and change.

You are allowed to disagree. Im sticking to my guns here. Keep in mind I am not much for extreme detail work that will bore half the forums to sleep and create a cascade of posts from moderators anxious to diagnose me with number flaws among other potential issues. (*Im old, sue me lol) Not to mention some persons would keep me upstairs in the back room painted yellow like one keeps a loose cannon uncle.

The one doctor I care about alot was my personal physicain. Been with this one nigh on 20+ years and change. He fixed a booboo back when there was no computers in the place worth mentioning. And to get a referral from him to several even older doctors to solve a problem is to step back into the 40's in some cases. No computers anywhere. Just hand dictation etc.

Obamacare took care of all that in 2008 driving costs up greatly. The war on opiates finished the rest. If I want to get good medicine by the 5 gallon bucket I'll have to go to Mexico and pay that doctor to do it, fill the scrip and then sit in the village square doing KP and learning (Kitchen Patrol... nothing dirty, just peeling taters) Until I Have a useful mastery of Spanish and then get involved in something down that way permanently. IF the medical system up here should fail completely and it's WELL on the way to doing so.

I keep amused with black humor. If anyone is familiar with Starwars, Jedi tricks etc. Maybe there is a smile today with this one from some years ago. It's really short. Personally I never go unless something is broken and can be fixed. I am actually allowed and encourage to go. I just rather not.

You must not have submitted an application to a non trucking job recently. I went up for a job at Enterprise Rent A Car when I was still in my 20's and they wouldn't hire me without a degree! (Is that a degree in car washing air or answering the phone?)

At the time I laughed it off as a particularly obnoxious HR person but the trouble I had finding work in my 20's was real. And since most places don't even acknowledge you even sent in an app anymore, who knows how many times I was rejected for not having a degree?

If this Free College thing goes through? Maybe I'll go back. There's a growing demand in STEM and I always wanted to be an engineer. Hard engineering is still a field dominated by facts and not feelings so there's less political correctness going on there, although I'd probably over 50 at minimum before I got out of school so I don't know what job prospects I'd have at that point.

When I was in college there was a lot of outsourcing. A lot of my professors were laid off plant managers. They said if you were serious about being an engineer, they recommended taking vigorous foreign language classes too. In the time since there have been massive civil works projects in Brazil, China and Saudi Arabia, but not much in the states. So they were pretty accurate about that.

Anyway, going to college isn't enough, you need to see which way the winds are blowing too. So you can be ahead of the pack when you get out.

The be fair, they want the education to be more affordable. It's not like the Degrees will be freely handed out.

Probably about the same people would graduate, maybe a few more if it becomes affordable, but the classes will still be a challenge.

I did go back to school and had a classmate in on the G.I. Bill so he got a break on it. It was for Software Development and he was freaking out. He didn't even finish the first semester.

I left after 2 Semesters partly due to financial reasons and frustration with the school doing remote Teleconference teaching. This is to bad because I found coding interesting, but I thought sitting at a satellite campus watching a class on a TV screen was ridiculous.

I do have a prior 2 year Associates in Cyber Security which I feel was a huge mistake and I'm going to be truck driving to pay for it. The requirements to get a Cyber Security job are insanely high. I badly wish I had gone for something basic like Web Developer to get strong coding skills. I tried switching it up going for Software Development, but dumb #### and financials as well as what I thought was supportive family dropping support screwed that plan up.

So I'm back on the road.

My degree opened up a lot of jobs, but some jobs are degree specific. I wanted to try teaching, so I went back to school and graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree. I’m in Texas so we make below national average, but I still make 270$/day to teach.
But I can also go to work for Lockheed Martin, Boeing, or most of the large companies in an easy entry level office role with my degree.
To summarize-a degree can open doors, but it’s does depend on the degree.

I think the best “blue collar” entry job now is machining, I have friends that made well over 50k their 1st year in DFW, have worked their way up above 60k, and are home every day. They also don’t have a 300/month student loan payment!

The building trades are begging for help
    Carpenters electricians and plumbers.
    A 5th year pipe fitter makes $50 an hour. Thats a $100k a year for a 40 hr week.
It just amazes me that theres not a waiting list on these jobs

Friend of mine online started an industrial sprinkler installation company. Offered me a job sight unseen even though he never met me in person. Just could tell I was the kinda guy that would follow through on stuff. He just can't find guys willing to do the work.

(I'm in PA and he's in OK, and he knows that.)

My wife and I both have for your degrees and we are making more driving a truck then we ever did as teachers. My 14 year old son has no interest in going to college but loves working with his hands. He wants to go into construction and I’m glad he won’t be wasting 4 years and thousands of dollars like I did. The future jobs that cannot be outsourced or automated are the only ones worth preparing for.
