And to add a bit more, because this would be considered his personal vehicle he would not need a CDL.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm the original poster and I appreciate the input. Here's how I had it done:
    1. I put temporary 72 hour insurance on the truck for $250.
    2. In order to get this insurance, I had to have a driver with at least 3 years experience on a CDL.
    3. I flew my friend with 18 years experience on CDL plus Diesel engine mechanic to Dallas for $350 (should have bought the plane ticket more than 6 days out). And paid him $800 to drive it back (3 days of work).
    4. He did get stopped for an inspection in Louisiana. He had the temporary insurance, which covers all the permissions, and a bill of sale and a letter from me saying what he was doing. He had paper logs. And no numbers or IFTA on the side of the cab.
    Thanks!!

    Thanks for the update.

I am not surprised on the cost of the insurance and to be clear the only reason you needed a CDl holder was to get that rate, otherwise the rate was higher?

I have a 2007 Pete 379exhd that I drive, no CDL and the playing and driving it with no permits edt was the easy part to figure out. The insurance not so much.....mine is through progressive and I pay $2400 a year that provides $500K limits for property and bodily harm with a $1K deductible. If anyone knows of a better way to get the insurance I would appreciate it.

BTW... now that you got her home how about sharing some photos? Here is my girl after I got her home

My understanding was that holding a CDL for at least three years was a requirement for this insurance... it is temporary trip insurance... and I think that there is only one agent doing it across the nation.
It is very good to know that if I wanted to go the non-commercial route and enjoy the rig privately I could do it as you are. Thanks!
Wow, that is quite the classic you have. And so much room in the sleeper! Great stripes. Very cool.
I have a blue one too. I'm afraid I can't figure out how to attach photos... but I put a photo in my avatar. Cheers!

My next step is a) moving the 5th wheel between the tandems, b) having extensive suspension work done, c) fixing a minor gas tank leak, d) resolving a problem where the low pressure sensor keeps going off even though the compressor builds air pressure in the normal range, and then maybe e) a clutch adjustment and valve clearance adjustment.

The key to making it work is what you put on the side of the truck. See attached

My understanding is that if have a MC #, you also do not have to pay sales tax on the purchase price. I don’t a MC # because that would make me commercial so I paid the sales tax, a 7.5% hit.

It sounds like I pretty much started down the same path you were headed . I originally bought an old white Volvo that I tore apart and was in the process of putting back together when I realized I don’t have the time for this project, that’s when I bought the Peterbilt.

What are your plans for this project? Will you be pulling a trailer at all? If the answer is no there is another registration route you can proceed that will drastically reduce your cost, both in terms of plating and insurance

I do plan to pull a trailer... and haul commercial loads. So I'm afraid I'll have to pay for the expensive insurance, etc. But I'll save money on sales tax, as you noted above.

Please tell me more as I am interested in this plan.
You’ve bought this truck, don’t have a CDL license and plan on hauling commercial loads? I realize you will be getting your CDL but who do you plan on pulling loads for?
Do you plan on getting your own authority? My understanding is that obtaining insurance on a new authority can be rather expensive, Like $18-$20,000 expensive
Sometimes in a forum setting or email setting The tone or context of a conversation can be lost so I want to make sure you understand I’m not challenging or questioning any of your logic here. I wish you nothing but success and I’m interested because this is something that I’ve always wanted to do on the side. I’ve got a great paying Day job and I’m not really willing to give this up A career in trucking . But I love my trucks and think it would be great to pull a load every once in a while.
I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in this and there are a few other folks that are lurking trying to understand a little bit more as well
