    Howdy all
I’ve been on here for a little bit reading and trying to gather the information that best suits my situation. But I still have a question.
I’ll try to word this inquiry the best way I can. So please bear with me.

About 3yrs ago I started working for the street maintenance and repair division of the city where I’m currently living. One of the requirements of my former job ( I’m no longer there. Transfered to a different department for more money) was to obtain my Class A CDL. With that being said. The truck I tested in, was an automatic dump truck with a bumper hitch. So obviously I’ve got certain restrictions on my license. But I do have an N-Tanker endorsement.

My question is. What if any other jobs would my CDL serve me in? I also have a horse business. So it’s not realistic for me to look at a career in OTR.

I hope my question is clearer than muddy water. Lol

Thanks for any input you can offer me.

I forgot to mention that other duties of my previous job was pulling a 20ft flatbed trailer loaded with light weight equipment I.e bobcats, mini excavaters, etc. I also had to salt and plow in the winter time. So living in the Midwest, bad weather is nothing new to me.

With my horse business, I have to be home every night to care for them. So over the road isn’t possible for me. I looking at local only. But with the restrictions, I’m sure my options are very limited.

I'm not sure their are many part time driving jobs, if your doing horse business. Their are local jobs were you get home every day. Then regional jobs were you get home like the weekend or 34-38 hour on weekend. Then full OTR and you can be out for weeks. Just depends on the driving you want to do.

Getting home every day is usually more loading and unloading for the driver, like fast food/resturesta delivery. You unload the truck and deliver the boxes inside restaurant. Guys that do beer or soda delivery. It all more work but you get home every day. Driver like UPS FedEx do line haul. They do same run usually every night the just drop and hook and meet another truck switxs trailer or trucks and drive back to terminal. You can go full OTR load in California drive to New York and unload.

    What jobs?

    Look around.

There are plenty of jobs that require a CDL-B license that you will qualify for. Just have to look locally.

Forget OTR work then. Forget regional or other work that takes you away from the horses. One could consider them a liability. Hopefully you make a income from them.

CDL A covers everything except motor cycles. You can run say a Concrete mixer in the day time. take care of the horses really fast before you have to rest up for the next early start. That is something else to consider. If the trucking boss says go at 5 am... guess what you are going. Or you can stay home and look for another employer.

Horses are a lot of work, it will cut into your ability to rest. If the horses are a business you would potentially be logging that one as on duty against your weekly 70 hour logs. I don't know.

There are many manuals out there. You will run into them but because of that silly automatic restriction propagated by the idiot states a few years ago it's unnecessarily a liability. Autos have been bought about 20 years ago or so to enable students to quickly push a button and roll quickly down the road without training to shift and go no where or cause damage.

It was not too much longer before the states thought about a new restriction.

The cdl will come in handy in construction ie: dump trucks, roll offs, septic, building supply distributor delivery. Also coke/pepsi, beer distributors. Find a local equipment rental company. Tons of local jobs for the cdl
