What kind of fuel economy can i see on a 1999 W900L 550 hp CAT 3:70 rears at 1400 rpm/ 65mph? And where may the sweet spot be (RPMs)?
I should add pulling a full load.

what kind of trailer?

i run a peterbilt with a 550cat same gearing, I get 5mpg if i run loaded at 65 but I am a car hauler, so not aerodynamic and always 80+k
Not much help I am sure.
BTW if you want fuel economy, dont buy a w900. You neet a T700 volvo or freightliner.
Stacks, air filters, windshield visors, and flat front surface area kill mileage. -
I'd venture to say 4-5

LOL it will be an alloy tanker, 7-7500 gal

My 02 550 averaged between 5.5-6mpg pulling a reefer.When I sold it # 923000 miles ecm average was 5.6mpg lifetime.I had 3.70 rears and an 18 DO.70mph @1500rpm is what it seemed to like best.24.5 tall rubber

My ? then would i be better of going 3:55 or 3:36 and a cummins 475 or 550 hp and i like 900L or 379 petes(I think they may ride better) looks but i can live with T-600 just cant live with the volvo look.
OH forgot to mention buying used and im sticking to pre egr. -
Engine wise it's personal preference.I won't buy anything but CAT.Rear ratio would depend on on what size tire you plan to run.My personal experience with the older Cat's is 1500rpms # whatever speed u plan to cruise at.
I can figure it out but I need to know your transmission ratio in the big hole and your tire size.Last edited: Mar 30, 2009

13 spd or 18 spd,,, and possibly but not likely a 15 spd .
I would like to keep best fuel economy i can get at 65-70 mph so im thinking 3:70s then with 24.5 hi or LPs . its just stuck in my head most economy is at 1300 -1400 rpms.
Preference for 900Ls /379s But i have to consider what's going to make the money also, thus T-600s.
Weight will always be at max or over. ALSO i get paid by the ton so truck weight is a factor also.Last edited: Mar 30, 2009

1325 rpm at 65 mph is for the Acert Cats according to Caterpillar if GCW is 80000lbs or less.1500-1650 at cruise speed if GCW is 90000lbs or more .3406E Cats like to run about 1450-1550rpms.When I switched to a company that had a 65mph speed limit my mpg's went down.I changed from 24.5 tall to 24.5 lo-pro and changed the revs per mile in the ecm to 500 to bring my rpms's back up.
If I were you I would be lookin for an 02 flattop Pete with a 6NZ Cat.If mine would have been a flattop I would still be drivin it.
