I am still in training. On the 3 lane highway, my trainer keeps telling not to be in the center lane if I am getting pass constantly on both the left and right lane when I am far from the cities. I thought the center lane was for non passing vehicles. If I am going 65 MPH and can not go the 70 MPH speed limit because my truck is governed, should I be in the center or right lane if I am getting passed a great number of times?
3 lane highway. Were should slow trucks be?

Pretty much everywhere ya go anymore, there is no trucks in the left lane laws (yes they suck) ... anyways, the middle lane is essentially the big truck hammer lane. No reason to jam the middle lane up if you're going 5 mph under the speed limit.
There's a few exceptions to this, but in general - Keep right except to pass. I know it's a problem with slow vehicles entering the freeway at 15 mph less than you, but if you're asking what lane you should stay in the most while going 5 mph under the speed limit, I say pick the right lane.psanderson and luvtheroad Thank this. -
I'd say 5 mph under the speed limit, your OK to be in that middle lane while traveling through a bigger city with lots of exits. It's a helluva lot safer there, and if I'm doing the speed limit (or more) and come up behind you, I understand why your there, so I move left and go on around. No biggie.
Now, if your piddle fartin around 10 or 15 under, expect me to get on the radio, lolMighty Mouse and Roadmedic Thank this. -
Looks like I will be in the right lane when there are 3 lanes in the country. My Werner truck is governed at 65 and I get passed constantly. Thanks
In the city, I will go back to center.

I'm governored at 62, so I know where your coming from. I judge each and every situation seperately. When traffic is stop/go, I'm in the center. If there's a lot of traffic merging, I'm in the center. When traffic is lighter, I'll stay right.
Mighty Mouse Thanks this. -
It's simple, stay to the right of faster moving traffic and to the left of slower moving traffic. And if you're getting passed on both sides you're definitely in the wrong lane. No need to make trucks pass you on the right.

until you are familiar with nashville it is a good idea to be in the center! as just following the SAME highway through town splits left right left

Memphis is the same way! In fact, lots of cities are. You are tooling along in the right lane, and suddenly, it's an "exit only" with no warning. Will the 4-wheelers let you into the middle? Not on your life! They will DIE before the let you over... then fly past you, slam on their brakes to make the exit. Anyway... through towns best to stay in the center. However, in the country... stay right except to pass. And keep in mind more and more states say if there are three or more lanes in the same direction, you cannot be in the left lane. NJ, NY, MO (since the first of this year), and others have this rule.

I tell all of my students that they can be in the center lane in the city as long as they are going the speed limit. and that have to watch there mirrors a lot more closely to see if a big truck is coming up on us fast. cas that's when they need to get over. if i see a truck pass them on the right I ask them if that suprised them? and when they said they came out of noware...thats when I say ya right get over and stay there. next time watch closer.
the bottom line is if u cannot go the speed limit u should be in the right lane.
if the speed limit is 70 and Ur going 65 then when a truck comes up behind u and Ur in the center lane wears he supposed to go ?? if u say he should just go around u that's wrong cas Ur not supposed to be in the left lane with a truck. and he's not susposed to pass u on the right either. so what do u think ur doing ??? impeading traffic.
and lets all keep in mind this is a trainer telling his studant this. there is a reason for this. studants have a hard time maintaining speed. they don't check traffic as much as they should. they need the pracitce of staying in the right lane.
o and by the way if you are in ca and a chip sees u in the center lane and trucks are passing u on the right and left? expect the chip to hit his lights and point for u to get over to the left lane. i seen this happen to one of my studants. the studant was giveing me every reason in the world why they should stay in the center lane, and i told them fine it's ur ticket. and when that happened with the chip.... I told them thats why u belong in the right lane.Mighty Mouse Thanks this. -
okay. so you don't know where the slow lane is and you don't know that you have to pul into truck inspections.............. Just where the HELL did you get a license from?
