Some ports require ships to plug in to shore power rather than operating their smokey generators during unloading. If the infrastructure in there, they can be required to use it.

As my friends and fellow experimenters are developing hydrogen technology for larger and larger engines, they soon may be quite smokeless. That is, if the oil companies will stop killing and generally destroying the experimenters and the technology advances.

A favorite argument I had many years ago with a 4wheeler who was saying the big trucks were the reason for the pollution of the cities: I asked him how much his car weighed and what his gas mileage was. A quick calculation, and I informed him that in order for him to get the same mileage as one of these trucks, he would have to TOW something like 39 more cars behind him with their engines off.
Something must have gone wrong with his radio then, because he couldn't transmit any more.

Actually, catalytics or something like that, yes. Factories here in the US have to do so too.
