It's amazing the way things can get so twisted. I am just glad that the ones that knew the real reasons spoke up, otherwise the mislead information could have kept someone for obtaining a good job with a good Company. Thanks GUYS!!

All I have to say is, I went to this school in oct. 2005. I never even received a letter from my DMV, and i found this out just by trying to get an insurance quote for my car. And when I called the DMV to comfirm the info. was correct, it was indeed. I went to the school with my learners permit, which at that time was not even required by Swift. I did NOT need to take any written exams, all I had to do was transfer my permit to the state of TN and become a resident for 30 days before they could issue me my license for a class A. The ONLY thing that I needed to be tested on by the state of TN was the skills part. And yes I did have to sit thru the class as well, which was a good refreshier for me since i had already had a class B license several years prior to attending the swift academy. I was Tested by an academy instructor who was a third party tester thru the school for the state. I was passed in all the skills as well as the road test. And hear I am 4 years later reciving word of this. At no point was I directly tested by someone who was a TennDot examiner, but only by a swift instructor/examiner. Some of the articals I have read indicated that there was an issue with a SWIFT tester and a DMV employee. Personally I beleive that the STATE and SCHOOL should be held liable since the do work hand in hand. Even though I have had my fair share of bellyachs with Swift, I do belive that they do a though job of making sure that ALL graduates are safely traind to be on the road, And that this incident revolves around ONE bad egg, not the whole school. Stay Safe out there Guys and Gals

My DH went through a similar experience recently after having his license for 8 years. There was a class action law suit filed and all drivers who attended the school involved who had a certain instructor were awarded all fees that had been paid to the school. It took a while to get it settled, but was well worth the wait. Any of you involved with this current situation, don't give up. Keep with it and try to stick together. It will work out in the end.

"jmeek30", it was good to hear back from you!
Yep, I know Youngstown is economically depressed. It was that way when my mother moved us twenty years ago. As I recall, everything was politics and corruption in politics. That's not why we moved, but that is how I remember it.
I visited relatives in town two years ago, and nothing had really changed.
May I ask what errors you made during backing? I'd like to reiterate here that you are required to exit the cab and walk around the vehicle to inspect for possible hazards prior to executing a backing maneuver. (Not saying that you didn't, either.) Then be sure that upon entering the cab, be sure to inform your examiner that you inspected around and behind the vehicle for hazards and that you found none. (I'd imagine that, should you find a hazard, that you should so state that to your examiner as well.)
Once you've passed the skills portion of the exam and get on the road, be sure to double-clutch, use every gear (at least for accelerating), and use hand-over-hand turns at intersections (no "palming" the wheel). Be sure to SAY OUT LOUD that you are scanning traffic for any hazards, and state any potential hazards that you DO see.
I'm planning a weekend trip to Youngstown the first weekend in May. Keep me posted on how you make out on your re-test! -
Well I got 0 points on both the straight line backing, and 45 degree back... So thought was going good, till he said we are going to do the 90 degree ally dock.... Well since I have not backed up really in the last almost 2 years. And drive a day cab with a shorter tanker on the back. And took the test in a beat up old volvo sleeper with I think a 53 ft trailer. I messed it all up. Kept cutting in way to much just clearing the inner cone. Well my overhang (which my trailer does not have) was taking out the imaginary wall the examiner said and he kept making me stop and pull up. On the 3rd attempt I got it in there good but didn't put the back of the trailer in the box. So failed...
Just to point something out. In Ohio you cannot get out before you back up. Because I remembered what you said before about getting out before you back up. So I asked about this and he said that they fought this but in the state of Ohio, this is considered 1 of your get outs. And he said don't waste them just in case you need them. Don't understand this but what I was told by the examiner... -
Well thankfully, I passed all my skills on Tuesday! Didn't get any points on the backing this time. So was happy! Just glad this ordeal is over. Cost about 4 days off work and money for the tests. I had it better then alot that lost there license for 30 days and so on. So I cannot complain to much. Just we should not of had to go through all this. You pay for something. You should get what you pay for... Well im off to bed. Everyone that has not completed this all yet Good Luck!

ok, I went to swift. I paid, they trained, got my license thru them. Their Instructors are 3rd party examiners for the state of TN. According to the letter I
recived from my state.... The Swift academy in Millington TN did NOT administer the Skills test in accordance to the TN Dept. of Safty, and did NOT adhear to Federal Guidlines. It states that I need to retest on my skills if I wish to hold a valid CDL. Falure to comply will result in Cancilation of my license. My state gave me 10 days. Now, The TN Dept. of Safty along with FMCSA sent letters to all the states that now have drivers licensed to the state in wich they reside, that took this course by this academy, and the letter states what the problem is and what they have decovered. It was ONLY a recomandation letter stating that we recomend that you residence on this list that live in your state should retest their skills. However, it was left up to the sole decision of the state in which you reside to retest you or not. Bottom line for the people that don't understand the bellyache..... Most of us have paid Swift for their services, and now our licenses are no good. A test that was valid for TN and tests that we all passed to OUR knowledge. The school passed our info on to the DMV which was processed by the DMV, and a license that was issued based on the info Swift provided to them. Woulden't you be pissed if you went to college, got a medical degeree or something, and then found out 4 years later that you were no longer able to pratice becaues of a screw up on the college. Something like they did not test you skills properly, and all along you have been doing a perfect job. Or how about people like me that had a class b license b4 I went to Swift and now I'm gonna loose that too!! And that class B, was issued to me at my local DMV. Now they want to tell me that I dont know how to even drive a class B truck when I had been doing so for 3 years with a clean record prior to Swift!!!! Common gimme a break!!Last edited: Apr 2, 2009
