This example is one of the best parts of being an independant OO.. It seems like some shippers, brokers and agents have a bad habit of not telling you the bad details until it comes time to sign the bills. I picked up a load in Laredo, going to the Fontana area, and it had an APPOINTMENT. First off I do not normally do appointments unless I have to meet a crane, period. Second the appointment time was for 2 days later than what the run called for.
I told them I would sign the bills once I got a new contract confirmation that either stated the reciever would unload me when I showed up, with detention pay after 2 hours, or payment for the 2 days storage on my trailer, either way would suit me. The agent (mercer) dicked me around for several hours, trying to say she was working with both the shipper and the reciever trying to get the appointment changed. I finally talked to those in charge at the shipper and they told me that was the first they had heard of it, so now I tell the agent that I am having them unload my trailer, I am done playing your game.
I now got a new contract and signed the bills and left.
This load eventually cost the agent her job with Mercer, I heard a couple of years later that she got it back though.
The first thing she did was when I got my settlement, it not only was on the first contract, but I was docked for not calling in one day. I called Louiville and ask why I needed to call in, being as the agent had called me checking on my location, hmm unusual, but we will fix that, next I explained about Iwa spaid on the wrong contrafct, hmmm it was the only one they had. It took a couple of weeks, but in the end I was paid what I was owed and was still in good standing with Louisville.

Here is a sentence that can infuriate some young truckers:
    "You need closed toe shoes."

  4. 4wheeler : " oh! You drive a tractor trailer. That's so easy I can do it with my eyes closed"

    Lunch counter
Super trucker : " I'm a millionaire,. I just drive around to stay busy"- wearing flip-flops dirty sweatpants and stained T-Shirt

Dispatcher: "just pay for it I'll reimburse you later"

Dispatcher/broker: "you need to install this app on your phone, so we can know where your at" it's a load of paper towels

I install the app then turn off my gps location on phone.

Sure I get calls but I tell them hey can’t you track me? Stop bothering me on my 10 when I’m sleeping.

An elderly woman in Florida once told me when I was picking up my bills that I would have to have long pants and leather closed toe shoes or boots on when I unloaded. lol I tried as hard as I could to be serious, and told her, Mam, I have delivered a lot of loads over the years, and never once have I delivered before I put my pants on. lol She got a kick out of it.
