Actually it helps in many situations. Delivery time etc. What I usually suggest is to get out of split breaking when you are ready for your 8 hour break just take a 10. Like you might drive 6 sleep 8 drive 5 take 2, drive 6 take 8, drive 5 take 2 then drive 6 then take a 10 (your 8 was actually due so just take a 10) to reset. It's not really losing much.

You can split as many days in a row (365 days) however to reset back to a normal 11/14 you must take a consecutive 10 hour break

    You are welcome

You don't want to look at the 11/14 hour rule as a 24 hour window that is where/how many drivers violate the hours of service.

You want to count over 14 hour from your last 10 hour break and in that 14 hours do NOT DRIVE past that 14 hour mark! If you hit 11 hours before your 14 hour then you must shut down. If you drive 6 then take a 10 then your 11/14 hr restarts from the end of that 10 hour break.

Anytime you have 8 hours in the sleeper you can count over 8 hours from your 14 hour mark and the driving time prior and after the 8 should not total more than 11 hours driving.

If I log the end of my day at 2000 but perform a Post TI from 1955-2005, have I taken a full 10 hr break if I start my next day at 0600?

It depends on how you log it. There are no 5 minute or 10 minute increments on your log sheet, so you have to log it to the closest 15 minute increment. In the case you have given you may log 1945 to 2000 or 2000 to 2015. If you spent more time on your PTI before 2000 then log it 1945 to 2000 and you have your 10 hour break.

If you log your post-trip until 8:00 pm you can't log 5 min increments.

Technically the answer would be no if you want to be exact to the minute but again you can't.

I have this recent bit of personal experience to share. Not sure if it's right, wrong or completely insane ('cause I have no idea anymore), but having just suffered a DOT audit (Logs matched to Qualcomm audit) for only 3 days (not 10 which were just approved by a DOT officer in a level I inspection) they decided to nail me for being Off-Duty at 0800-0815 when I didn't actually stop driving until 0802. Everyone else I've talked to (DOT and otherwise) says that you must round to the nearest 15 which means anything from 0800-0807.4 should be logged as initiating or ending at 0800. So how can I get a log violation for driving 2 mins past when I said I was Off-Duty if it is impossible to log 0802?

I guess being a pee-on driver even when you're right you're wrong according to everybody else?

    Dang... that really stinks:tongue2:!

How did they nab you? Was this a roadside inspection? What kind of fine did you get?

it IS BS!! but if you stop AFTER the 1/4 hour mark you are SUPPOSED to log it as the next 1/4 hour on the log.
IE... stop at 0803 log as stoped at 0815. that is what i had to go through to at USA (to be eligible for training)

I appreciate this ! It helps alot! I might be going back out again for OTR and i been trying to study up on these very situations, got all my study/learning manuals out from when i got my A license last year! Been driving local out of baltimore 300 miles a day. Doing local logs are easy, never work over 14 hours and only fill out a log if i work over 12 hours or go over 300 miles! Again Thanks!!
