For the last couple months I have been using the Lamar CO scale to check weights. I go through there at generally the same time each week and the east bound one is always closed but the scale will still display the weight as you roll over it.
I am never in danger of ever being over weight since I found out in Colorado you can gross 85k on non-interstate roads and 20k on each axle.
I figure they leave the scale turned on for drivers just like me wanting to do it for free so I should not get in any trouble here, right?
Ever use the dot scales to get your weight for free when they are closed?

Don't know about CO but WA and OR will turn the displays around inside so you can see them through the window if they are closed.

All my life I buy a CAT ticket....austinmike, Cattleman84, BUMBACLADWAR and 5 others Thank this. -
If I want to know my weights before I get to a CAT scale and there is a DOT station that shows it, sure I will use it.
Why not?
If they did not want us to they would shut it off or block the access road.D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -

I think it's pretty much a universal thing.
Here in Canada almost all government scales will leave the display on for truckers to use when they are closed, except for the odd one where the operator has a hate on for truckers.D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -
Gutsiest move I've ever heard of. Volunteering at a state scale, open or closed, what, are you nuts? Who knows where that readout goes? And with cameras today, they'll be after you faster than Yogi on a pic-a-nic basket.
Mooseontheloose, chimbotano, BUMBACLADWAR and 3 others Thank this. -
Our drivers check-weigh on closed scales a lot and we've never had a problem.
All the trucks have on-board scales and cross checking with a fixed scale once in awhile helps us keep them accurate. -
Washington is one of the few states I've run across where the state scales will let you weigh or axle out before they write you up as long as you ask beforehand. At least up there in apple country.
D.Tibbitt Thanks this.
