Just bought a brand new 980 ( on sale at pilot for $129.99 until tomorrow) and everything mrcllusb described regarding the rf gain is absolutely correct, Uniden has obviously made some changes from the earlier radios. I actually like it better ,because as Volvo stated , the rf gain is on high 100% of the time and you can preset local to level 3 or 4 ( max 5) and if static level gets to high just push rf gain button and activate local mode and now rf gain level is set to 3 or 4, alot easier to control then before. Much to my surprise the carrier is set right at 4 watts stock, unlike some of the earlier radios which were set at 3 or less ( based on forum posts ) and the swr meter is very accurate where as my other radio always measured 1.0 regardless. Sitting at pilot in Franklin Oh just listening to I 75 chatter, and just like other radio the receive is awesome, even went to lsb 31 and 38 and heard some transmissions out in the distance. Just thought I would update info on the 980.Slowmover1 Thanks this.

Why anyone thinks another radio should be the AUTOMATIC first choice is past me.
Have to spend twice or more to maybe (maybe) get a little more.wolverine11 Thanks this. -
Because it has a decent stock mic that doesn't mak you sound like a quacking duck stuck in a toilet?

I think an important point that often gets missed in these threads is that people have different desires, requirements etc from their radio. It would be impossible for one radio to be perfect for everybody. In my case I couldn't care less what somebody 20 miles away is saying, let alone 1000 miles. I want to be able to talk to vehicles I can see, yet I want enough power to sound like I mean businessLast edited: May 1, 2019

1). AM/SSB covers what CB can do.
2). The 980 is an inexpensive, proven radio
Want to upgrade?
A). RM ITALY KL203 amp
$75 for 75W
Now it’s a BIG RADIO
B). Maximum set of ears:
WEST MOUNTAIN RADIO CLEARSPEAKER
$200
Now it’s a radio that outperforms the rest.
And it all fits factory cubby & runs off factory 15A circuit.shogun Thanks this. -
Well, it’s a radio that outperforms almost all radios.Slowmover1 Thanks this.

Point being: at an impressively low cost.
With no fancy install. Any driver can deal with it.
Buy It, install it, stir the S-pot on the way thru town.
Upgrade? (things only get better)
A). Hear about the road closure MILES ahead of the Big Radios.
B). Reach out to locals not on your road to confirm alternate route.
The antenna system is what needs help from a qualified tech.

Hey, I LOVE to stir the S-pot with my 99v2 Galaxy
Roger Beep
Endless echo
Robot voice.
Every once in a blue moon.
The receiver IS a bit better. But it won’t fit in the cubby. Drifts slightly (barely). Etc.
First choice is an SMT UNIDEN.
