How many flatbedders out here have a printer in your truck for permits? I've had one for a while, even as a company driver, because they pay for themselves after (max) 4 trips and it beats getting butt raped at $2/page at the fuel stops.

As a former IT guy, I've only recommended laser printers for the last 10 years or more. BUT, I have found that most are too sensitive to last in a truck. We have been using the Epson XP-440 ink jet for a year with no issue.

I have a Brother 'compact' on the truck. In the long run, toner is cheaper than ink and bills dont need color, anyway.

Brother compact laser was my first choice, constant issues with it going into an error state. It could have just been my unit but I needed one right away on the road so I picked up the Epson at Walmart. Replaced the first ink cartridge at 7 months and we print everything with it. I do have the settings locked to black only to save the color cartridges. The Brother works fine in the office

@dynamite the only error I seem to get is 'no toner cartridge'. I just smack it a few times and push it back in and it's fine.

I had an hp inkjet with black only.

Used it for my logs also. Back in the day when paper was legal to use.

I use this printer. It will also run off a battery.
I use the power outlet in truck.
    Bluetooth for phone app
Hard wire to use with my old laptop.

Paper comes perforated in rolls for single sheet use. Or unperforated to save paper. It will stop rolling at the end of print.

Thermal printer no ink or toner small and portable.

Inkjet printer always had a problem with ink freezing in the winter and bleeding out the cartridge. I read about toner clumping in same conditions.

So $2 per page over 4 trips will pay for a printer?
Just how many pages are involved here for a few permits?

Easily dozens of pages depending on load and distance(states or provinces). Also some cities and counties require their own permits. Escort vehicles also need a copy of your permits. Depending on the load you must also have route surveys and run reports. You could easily spend over $100 at the truck stop on a single trip.
