I swapped a C15 in place of a 3406e with cracked head, but no start, no smoke.

I changed the 40 pin plug to 70 pin plug with the use of wiring diagrams from Cat.

    Any suggestions???

I was very meticously when switching pins frm plug to plug, is it possible I have the wrong wiring diagrams?

I got the wrong 70 pin plug from cat the first time

I really can't say what the issue is whitout being there. But I would have to guess that its in the wiring or ecm.

On a side note. I've never heard of anybody swapping out a e-model for a C-15. I know you stated the e-model had a cracked head, but I think I would of done a out of frame rebuild on it and been happy. Especially with all the problems the C-15 motor has. What made you come to this decision? I'm not trying to pry or be negative, just wondering.

The owner of the truck was concerned over his truck meeting the possible new emssion standards for Calif. I don't know much about that issue, the C15 he found was a take out at the right price.

I did some messing with wiring and found the Key switched 12v power was in the wrong spot. Now when the engine cranks over the oil pressure registers but still no smoke.

The wiring schematic I have for the C15 shows 2 pins having 12v power all the time. the 3406e only required 1 pin, thus the C15 plug only has one pin supplied with 12v.

Do I need to power both pins???

Does the check engine light come on when you turn the key on? that's a sign the ecm is getting power, earth and key signal.

I added a 12v supply and ground and double check my pin locations. Everything is wired as Caterpillarwrench said. Still no smoke.

The check engine light comes on with key in on position.

Is there a way to check the ECM or have it checked by?

Thanks for all the quick responses and good info.

You may have air in your fuel lines and you injectors won't pop off so that may be why your not getting any smoke or it to start.

Can you pressurize the fuel system? If not just use the primer pump, pump it up, have someone turn the motor over and keep pumping. Your gonna work you butt off but this could be the problem.

I'm sure there is an easier way of doing this?

I put a pressure gauge on the check point at the filter. The fuel pressure ran up to 60 psi while cranking engine over...but still no smoke.
