If I remember right there was a guy who had a 3zj that just used a marine nozzle and opened the pump up a bit. Ran really good.. I dont think he even bumped the timing much if at all.

    Do a search.

I wouldn't change the advance and pump. Just get the right nozzles and open up the stock pump a few turns.

    AArtemtrk Thanks this.

If you want to run a hot mechanical it shouldn’ have aluminum pistons in it.

Leave it alone until you are ready to inframe and put some good parts in it.

Thanks @SmokinCAT Do you know what part number steel crowned pistons are for my motor? What compression ratio should I get? If you read my thread “3406C build” it has more information on what I’m trying to do. Really appreciate your response I’ve been reading this forum and “ thedieselgarage” and have read a lot of your advice and I am super pleased you took time to help me.

10R1439 is the cylinder pack that should be used, this is a lower compression pack and the matching nozzle is 0R8789.

Thanks again @SmokinCAT !!!! Will this arrangement make me lose low end lugging power, what kind of hp can I expect? What are advantages of lower compression, ability to boost more? Also in your experience if I bump static timing slightly does this produce favourable results? I appreciate you taking time to help me!

Why would you lose low end?

Those are the nozzles and pistons for a 587hp gen set engine, I would expect HP to be similar is pump is set correctly.

You can advance pump timing a bit.

Oxbow, spsauerland and AArtemtrk Thank this.

Wow that’s almost 600hp!! Are the injection pumps identical between highway and industrial motors? Eg barrels and plungers, timing advance, and pump cam? What turbo would work well with this setup? Do you have an opinion on square vs round port heads? Thanks again @SmokinCAT this is finally starting to make sense to me!

    Oxbow Thanks this.

The barrels and plungers are the same, pump cam is different, and most are either fixed time or use the early style advance like the 7FB, but most advances only fit specific pump cams.

Low compression stick with a square port head, they like the lower compression.

Borg Warner 1496 988 0001 for charger if you change all those parts.

If you are not changing hard parts and are just turning screws than the 177148 will be the best fit.

Well @SmokinCAT I guess that’s all the information a man will ever need! Last question however when you say “you can advance pump timing a bit” what do you consider safe 3* static time advance too much? What about dynamic? Thanks again for all the tailored information?

    Oxbow Thanks this.
