You should have been informed about "Selective Service" while still in high school.
If not, no big deal. You can still join the military reserves if you want an additional retirement check in the future.

I never was. I did get a letter in the mail after I had already gone through boot camp telling me to register though.

Canada is CLOSED to you for life, the basic American DUI is actually a felony up there. So limiting you to companies that do not do Canada. It's a shame in good weather is glorious up there

that's what i was thinking, that in high school, he would have been told.

i cannot believe he never heard of or knew about it...

oh well......he'll most likely never get a student loan, but i also wonder about any home mortgages as well, since so many of those are federally backed up..???

    anyone know..??

We were never told a thing about the draft when I went to school. I knew it existed, but I just figured it was automatic. Joining the military automatically registered me anyways, but other than a letter that came months after turning 18, I never knew it was something you had to actually do yourself so I can understand him not knowing if that letter never made it to him.

    As far as his penalties...
He is ineligible for- federal student loans and grant programs, federal job training under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (formerly Workforce Investment Act), and federal jobs or security clearance as a contractor.

back in my day, it was the law to register 30 days prior to my 18th birthday

in fact, it also states that on the sites as well.....!!

as far as federal jobs, and student loans, yes, i was aware of that, cuz i had read it.

the one thing i was never sure of and did not find it anywhere, is if a home mortgage is unavailable as well, since that too is federally backed up..

i just did not want to assume anythng, regarding that.

That is great. I'm saying that no one informs you of any requirement to register (they didn't at my school anyways), except for a card that shows up in the mail after you've turned 18. If you moved out and your mail wasn't forwarded, no one told you about your mail, or you just didn't have an address growing up due to hard times you may have never received this card. I can completely understand not being aware that you have to register, thinking that it is an automatic process, if you don't go to college and run into that while filling out FAFSA forms and such. Not everything is going to happen how it happened for you.

Not all mortgages are Government backed, but the official Selective Service site doesn't mention and Government-back loans other than student loans. Either this is a glaring omission or it was done purposely.

Like I said, never heard of Selective Service until a few weeks ago. Things like that weren't a topic of discussion in my 20+ years of living in the Bronx. While I went to a good high school and was in advanced placement courses things happened and I was expelled at 16 and I got my GED at 17 while on trial to appease the court. School/college/loans hasn't crossed my mind until very recently and here I am asking for suggestions on the best school or companies given my circumstances. As far as Canada, I have a dui on my driving record, not my criminal record, idk if that counts for anything. Thanks @Chinatown for the only suggestion on this thread thus far lol

A dui within the last 10 years automatically denies you from every good carrier and even the majority of the bad ones. You are probably looking at bottom of the barrel second chance companies like western express and Carolina cargo.
