I have no idea. I was just repeating what the manual says. Someone with more knowledge and experience then me will have to answer that question.
(That won't be too hard to find!!)

If you are going to do it legally, then yes, you are responcible for him as an employee.
Many do not do this, they pay on a 1099 as a contractor, but according to the IRS this is an illigal practice. As his co-driver, working for him while he is leasing the truck, the owner/ employer is responcible for all of this. And this will cut down on your husbands take home pay quite a bit. You may want to look into employer contribution for social security and unemployment before you take the leap. It is not as simple as what the whole concept of getting a buddy run with you and getting great miles, the way it sounds in theory.
Also, getting 6000 miles a week, while great miles, will be what? 3200 miles a week over milage that will be taken out of his pay as well? That will add up fast also.
Centrals Owner Op pay is extremly low. My company will not touch freight that pays less than 1.80 a mile + FSC. Our break even is around 1.40, since we have office staff, insurance, health ins, mechanics ect. Most of our freight pays well over 2.00 a mile, good since all I get is 20% of gross. Lucky for me I get a few 4.00 a mile runs every week or so.
The point is, Central pays less than 1.00 a mile to owner ops, yes they get FSC also, but with the cost of fuel back down in the 2.20 range for a national average, FSC does not add up to much at the moment. After all costs I really don't think he will be able to pay his co-driver more than the driver is making as a solo. If you do pay him more than he is making solo, you will pay what? .20 cpm for all miles the truck goes? This will take your gross down below .80 cpm. With the unemployment and social security you will be closer to .74 cpm or so gross. Subtract out all expences and you will now be taking home about the same as you are paying him, or less.
Just be carefull and talk to a tax expert before you do this. The IRS is looking close at 1099s on truck drivers. They have already busted some big companys for millions. Yes it took them 3-4 years before they went to the companys and brought them to court, but they are doing it. -
Thank you. From what we understand. Once the pay is split his buddy's (which is still a company driver) pay will all be taxed by Central. Rhino has talked extensively to his trainer about L/O. But we of course still have many questions. We are not going to do anything until we know all that we need to know. I am planning on going and talking with our accountant. Having 8 kids we get a break on taxes. lol

quick question for a driver.....do you need to ask permission to park a trailor at a truck stop for your couple of days off?
-
If your just dropping the trailer then yes you do!! It has to be approved by truck stop and your FM.cubby_bob Thanks this.
-
so if i leave the tractor attached i dont have to ask is that right?
-
Well I have experience with this, right after school and training, me and another guy decided to team. We were running SOLO miles as a team, 3 D/M's later we decided to split up and go solo and are doing better pay wise. Our adverage week was 4000 miles or less as a team, usually less.
I don't recomend it, unless you are going to team with spouse. -
Thats correct is you leave truck and trailer there your good! Just let your your FM know your leaving your truck and trailer at the xx truck stop and its all good.cubby_bob Thanks this.
-
Yeah I really don't recommend teaming unless your a husband and wife team and its going into same bank acc lol.
Like when i finally get my new Green card I will get an American drivers licence and I will probably team with JJ but our money will be going into our Bank acc!The Challenger Thanks this.
