Crew on US ship say Somali pirates hold captain

NAIROBI, Kenya The American crew of a hijacked U.S.-flagged ship retook control of the vessel from Somali pirates Wednesday but the captain was still being held hostage in a lifeboat, according to at least three people on board. U.S. officials said an American warship and a half dozen others were headed to the scene. One official said the destroyer USS Bainbridge was headed there. Another official said there were six or seven ships on the way.
"Right now they want to hold our captain for ransom, and we are trying to get him back," second mate Ken Quinn told CNN in a live interview after the cable news network called the boat.

It's about time someone stood up to these vermin and kicked their bu tts. And as usual it was an American crew that had the guts to stand up and say NO! God bless the captain and keep him safe.

US warship arrives as pirates' options dwindle

NAIROBI, Kenya A U.S. destroyer kept watch Thursday in waters where Somali pirates held an American captain in a drifting lifeboat near a cargo ship that was hijacked and later retaken by the crew in an hours-long, high seas drama.
The pirates took Capt. Richard Phillips as a hostage as they escaped into a lifeboat Wednesday in the first such attack on American sailors in around 200 years.
Kevin Speers, a spokesman for the ship company Maersk, said the pirates have made no demands yet to the company.
He said the USS Bainbridge had arrived off the Horn of Africa near where the pirates were floating near the Maersk Alabama.

My problem is ,you have a ship as large as this a rowboat pulls up & you let the pirates aboard?Why dont they arm these ships and just blow any boat that is threatening out of the water.These pirates have a gig here,seize a ship hold it for ransom,get paid, when is someone going to put the fear of death into these people?Kill a few pirates then maybe they'll think the risk is to high.

FBI joins effort in hostage standoff with pirates

NAIROBI, Kenya FBI hostage negotiators joined U.S. Navy efforts Thursday to free an American cargo ship captain held captive on a lifeboat by Somali pirates. A U.S. destroyer and a spy plane kept a close watch in the high-seas standoff near the Horn of Africa.
The pirates tried to hijack the U.S.-flagged Maersk Alabama on Wednesday, but Capt. Richard Phillips thwarted their takeover by telling his crew of about 20 to lock themselves in a room, the crew told stateside relatives.
The crew later overpowered some of the pirates, but Phillips surrendered himself to the bandits to safeguard his crew, and at least four of them fled with him to an enclosed lifeboat, the relatives said. It was the first such attack on American sailors in about 200 years.

Pirates vow to fight if attacked

MOGADISHU (Reuters) Somali pirates holding an American hostage on a drifting lifeboat vowed on Friday to fight any attack by U.S. naval forces stalking them at high sea.
"We are not afraid of the Americans," one of the pirates told Reuters by satellite phone on behalf of the gang holding ship captain Richard Phillips in the Indian Ocean.
"We will defend ourselves if attacked."
Despite their defiant talk, maritime groups tracking the saga -- the first time Somali pirates have captured an American -- say a more likely outcome is a negotiated solution, possibly involving safe passage in exchange for their captive.

American Ship Captain Held Hostage Unsuccessfully Attempts to Escape
4/10/09

Capt. Richard Phillips, held hostage by pirates on a lifeboat, attempted to escape but was recaptured, U.S. military officials said.
Sometime overnight, captain Phillips got away for a short period, and jumped off the lifeboat in an attempt to swim away, probably managing to escape through the lifeboat's backdoor. The drama was witnessed at some distance by the U.S. Navy, but it reportedly happened so quickly they could not provide assistance.
Shipping company Maersk said Thursday, prior to the escape attempt, that Phillips had a radio and contacted the Navy and the crew of the Alabama to say was unharmed.
