Except that you overdrive even your high beams at 55-mph.

I-80 from Omaha to Salt Lake City at 75 MPH.

    72 MPH (average) x 10.96 hrs = 789 miles

    @ 78 MPH

    74 MPH (average) x 10.96 hrs = 811 miles

With old incandecent bulbs yes... But have you sat behind the wheel of the new Volvos with the LED head lights? And yes mine are aimed correctly, I rarely get flashed... But I can see farther with my dims now than I could with my brights previously... And I think I can see the next state with my brights on, lol.

Go and measure. Full distance to a complete stop including reaction time

1200-1500 feet. And we argue with ourselves whether it’s an illusion. An elk is an elk in daylight. A big weird shadow at night. .

Interstates rhensekved are better than they were circa 1969. Signage and markings. Reflectivity.

But Dark is dark. We can’t see as far.

There’s no nighttime justification for daytime speed limits.

I, too, like the low traffic. 11-pm to 11-am. I may start in the dark, but I never willingly choose to end the day that way.

Being in a 65 mph governed truck, my max would be approx 700 miles after 11 hours. Go more at your risk.

My personal best was the day after I graduated high school in 1978. My best friend and I drove my Honda CVCC from California to my home town in Ohio 48 hours non-stop. This was when the national speed limit was 55 and it was impossible to sleep in that little death trap. We both slept for a day and a half after getting there. My girlfriend who lived there wanted to get busy, and I fell asleep on top of her. Not one of my proudest moments.

The problem is keeping your average speed that high. This week I went from Omaha to Rock Springs WY in 10 hours and 49 minutes. That's 758 miles with an average speed of 69-70mph in a truck that was doing 75mph most of the time. The hills, construction and weigh stations take their toll on your average speed. I also had a 42,000 pound load. By the time I got parked and did my post-trip, I had 4 minutes left on my 11, but that's how I planned it because I made a prime parking reservation at the Pilot and didn't want to waste the parking fee.
