We are in the process of buying a used truck with 514,000 miles on the clock. The dealer has a 30 day warranty and offers an extended warranty for $4000. My first impulse was to buy the warranty but then I have since had second thoughts about this warranty. Its for one year or 100,000 miles which amounts to about 25 weeks +/- for a team operation.
I'd like your opinions on this issue.

    Thank you.

Depends on the warranty. if it's only god from them it's not worth much unless you drive locally. if it's a national plan then it's a toss up. if it's something like a cat warranty then the motor needs to be inspected and any problems fixed before they will extend it so it's a pretty good deal

The dealer has outlets scattered from coast to coast and the underwriter is based in New Jersey. They have a group of authorized mechanics who they will send the truck to but they don't offer towing service and I am not sure about roadside service. The more I think about it the more skeptical I get and combine that with the savings of $4000 the less inclined I am to purchase. I'm thinking we can save close to that amount in the first 30 days while covered by the 30 day warranty.

personally I'd spend the money to have the truck put on the dyno. that will tell you the condition of the motor, pounds of blowby, if the HP is where it should be or if it's low(worn motor) etc.
dyno's aren't just for measuring HP. you should always have a dyno run done when buying a truck right along with the oil samples etc

The dealer is in Houston. There is a Volvo shop nearby but I would have no idea of where to look.

    Thanks.

Also check to see what the warranty covers. For 4 grand it better cover everything but that doesn't mean it will, also for the price you'd think that'd be a 2 year warranty.

My experience with warranty work is that it is difficult to get the dealership to honor the warranty. It always seems to be a game where they find some-kind of loop hole to make you pay them.
I think if you like this truck have it checked-out as well as possible. Even if you have to take it somewhere else and pay to have it checked-out. If you get a clean bill of health save the $4000 dollars and hope for the best. That is my opinion. I can understand you may want the warranty for peace of mind. It is up to you to decide if it is worth $4000 dollars.

I looked into a few warranties out there before buying one on my used truck, and the one that sounded the best to me was offered by Premium 2000.

I don't know exactly what the cost is, it was written as part of the deal on my truck. It is a 2yr/ 200k mile warranty on the engine (Cummins ISX@475hp), the Eaton Fuller 13spd, and the drive axles. From the details provided, it covers all internally lubed parts in all the above assemblies, and the turbo. If you google search Premium Truck Warranty you will find the details.

The selling point on this warranty was after talking to a few shop managers, they seemed to have no grief points on dealing with the claims on these warranties (unlike the Volvo Gen2 program). I wanted some piece of mind with the truck already having 470k miles on the clock.

I'd also like to mention the fact that with transmission coverage, the drive axles are included - even though mine are under the factory warranty until 750k mi.

Hope this helps some, I have yet to make any claims under the warranty - and really hope I never have to (downtime and lost miles). I'll post back later if or when and let you know how it turns out.

I would agree, I too have look at the Premium 2000 waranty. Not sure which state you live in, but here in Alabama that warranty runs between 2000 and 2500 dollars. Most of the truck dealers here (Around the Birmingham area) are offering to throw in the warranty just to move some trucks. With the economy the way it is, and if they wanted to move that truck, I would ask. You'll never know until you do. Also, never buy a use truck without a dyno test. This test will give you a good indication as to how much money you will need to spend in the upcoming months/years for minor and major maintenance. Hope this helps.
