UPS feeder and package car drivers start really low (I’ve heard $18/hr). I was talking with a driver who said he tops out after 10 years something like $36/hr, but year 9 to year 10 is an $8 increase.

All of those have OT after 40.[/QUOTE] UPS is 4 years to top rate from your seniority date.

It all depends on who you ask.
1 guy is perfectly happy making 12 bucks an hour while another guy is perfectly happy making $37 an hour

In Lexington, Ky.. My experience was that the full time temp seasonal feeder drivers start at $30 per hr and overtime at the 8th hour , then drop back to around $18 if hired full time permanently. Last I heard, it is 5 years to top out at about $36 per hour but the 5 year may have changed to 4 years.

The economy plays a part also.

When it crashes. And it's coming again. Wages go down and hours are cut. Drivers will be begging for work. As in. New rookies.

I was making $20 an hour and 60 hours before the last crash. When my hours dropped to 30. It was time to move on. But starting wages dropped from $16 to $10.

I went OTR and waited 7 years for wages to come back up.

Now minimum wage has doubled. But other wages haven't gone up.

What's considered good hourly pay? Depends on what works for you individually.

Sorry, not a skilled trade. A skilled trade requires education, driving doesn’t require education. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy driving & flatbed work & other segments of trucking require more then just driving. You actually think the A/C guys & electricians don’t have any liability ? FWI, driving is a privilege, not a skilled trade.

Good to know. I was basing my info on what I remembered from talking to a package van driver a few weeks ago, but I thought they had the same scale as the class A drivers.

UPS is about the only place I would consider going to right now, but it seems like everyone starts off as seasonal, and I'm not willing to take that risk.

Things that do good in hard times are, cigarettes, alcohol and boots. So maybe depends on what market you're hauling for. I personally haul about 4 million + gallons of liquid per year. Markets strong and growing for the liquid I haul. 1 ISO tank filled with over 6,000 gallons and I usually get 3 - 4 tanks per day to the rail, 5 days per week. We are currently doing around 40 tanks per week total.

The only reason I was willing to take the risk was because I was basically down to get hired by them or leave the industry.
