yes very strange.
to be fair scania was never really successful in small engines.
man now offer 9L d15 engine, scr only.
i have heard many rumors there will be no more scania v8, but i think if they really do that they can close scania as it largely depends on v8 heritage.
i think vw will discontinue man with big engines. i see it as:
-in passenger cars, vw owns several brands, lowest on range is seat, škoda is much better, vw little bit better and audi as premium brand.
-in cars they have bit of overlap between similar products from different brands, but this is not a problem
-you buy car by emotions and someone who is buying vw buy it because he already own one and despite new vw cars are not even close as good as they used to be, (we still own golf 4 with 330 000km and first clutch, used only in city.), he will still buy it.
-you buy škoda because once your father had one, even despite it was ####ty communist car you still love it because of your child days and now buying it only because of name.
-so their own brands are not really competition
-you are going to buy truck with paper and calculator.
-in trucks they cannot afford competition, so they have to make big gap between MAN and Scania to avoid overlap
-some of you will remember than man was quite serious product till F2000, now they are worst and worst. their development stage is way behind most other brands, reliability is quite poor
-at same time they will make scania even more premium than now, at least in image and features.
-since vw dont have clue about truck industry and look only by numbers and have big problems with dieselgate, they have to cut wherever they can to get some money.
so you will buy scania without any serious quality as you expect from scania for high price same thing as audi.
-in next generation platform you can expect same thing as volvo/renault, same truck with different look
Why do so many Americans hate European trucks?

We had FH16 Volvo in the past, pulled like a train, it was different from standard 13 liters. Even though it was only 540, and Dafs at the time we had (E5) were 510. They couldn't even dream about keeping up.
And ofc, Volvo FH16 was more economical than those Dafs, but that's something what I'm trying to tell you for a long time.medioker, Oxbow, pushbroom and 1 other person Thank this. -
btw someone have to be very crazy to buy new vw products, when i see their post dieselgate models, really funny. when i see for example t-roc it is like fiat with vw badge. golf 7 is still rather OK. redesign is cheaper made than old but still ok.
scania nextgen was completely different truck than now but obviously too expensive. -

They don't trust the mx and never will. Reputation is a funny thing. Good or bad it takes decades to change it.
Cat built a rep for indestructible power with the 1693 and 3208 that they carried for 30 years after they stopped producing them.
Cummins built a rep on the big cam for reliability and all the broken cams of the early isx's didn't change it.
The dd15 isn't a great engine yet peyote still buy them cause the 60 series woukd go a million miles and never need touched while getting amazing fuel economy.
When the mx was introduced here it was a gutless pig that sucked down the fuel and needed a tow truck to follow it around. They could put out a trouble free engine today but its still going to take decades to erase the damage they initially did to the brand. Even paccar knows this which is why the mx isn't even available as an option in their top tier trucks.Oxbow, pushbroom, AModelCat and 1 other person Thank this. -

A quick search on truckpaper shows 6 W990's with Paccar, 60 with Cummins.
A clear indication of what dealers think is safe to stock and be able to sell.
BTW, the percentage of MX-engines in UPS trucks is coming down, in favour of Cummins.
More and more of the trucks purchased by UPS nowadays have Cummins engines.Last edited: Jun 10, 2019
Reason for edit: Added truckpaper numbers of W990's for sale.
