If you are not currently taking them just go take the physical and forget it. This thing is tough enough as it is for new folks. Stop making it harder than it need be.

Last question: at what point exactly do you sign the contract? Before or after all the prerequisite checks and verifications and stuff? Like let's say I apply to a mega and they ship me off to orientation right away with little to no questions asked, but then during orientation they decide that my poor credit history disqualifies me, or something with my background check or employment history doesn't pass. Am I made to sign the contract BEFORE they do all these checks? Or is it like if I've gotten to the contract part then that means I'm definitely in and the only way out is to fail or quit or get fired?

If you get the job and start earning say 1000 a week, put away 500 of that.

Soon in less than three months you will have your 5000. Pay em off.

You're not under contract until you pass everything, including cdl school.
Once you get the cdl , then the contract starts.
Which state do you live in; we can recommend some trucking company schools.
Are you working now and if not, how long since you've worked?

    Yup, that's the plan.

Man that's a huge relief, thank you. Although it makes me wonder what prevents someone from getting the CDL and then bouncing before signing the contract. I guess they don't physically give it to you til you sign?

I currently don't really have a home base. I've been hitch hiking all around the country. So my options are pretty wide open. I have settled in southern California right now and been working a job for a few months. But overall my employment history is spotty. Last job before this was 9 months ago, only worked a couple months, and before that was a full year of unemployment. I understand I will need to explain these gaps and have notarized letters from people confirming I was unemployed and not involved in illegal activity, correct?

The employment gaps and my atrocious credit are my biggest concerns now. Six debts all in delinquency, totalling around $10k. A mix of credit cards, utility bills, and student loans.

Stop stressing. Credit has nothing to do with getting a truck driving job.

In regards to the gaps in employment, I understand they need to know what I was doing during this time for legal reasons, so would it be sufficient to just say "I took time off to deal with personal issues. I can provide notorized letters from people who can confirm I was unemployed and not involved in any illegal activity during these times" and leave it at that? Or would they press me for more details?
