I hate cyclists. A lot of them are stunned. I stick to dirt trails, away from cars. Too many nanny systems on cars means the drivers don't pay attention like they should.

When I went to high school in Idaho, we had kids that would stay with relatives or friends in town and only go home on the weekends, about 60 miles away. Some of it paved. There were months during the winter they only made it home once or twice.

    It's not one world....

I'm the same way, I think most cyclists are clowns and fools.

I learned my lesson at 10 yrs old when I got hit by a priest in a 1958 Pontiac and 58 Pontiacs don't have much give to them, ouch!
When I was still able, I would ride my bicycle on side streets, river trails, parks, rail lines, back lanes, anywhere but major streets with a high volume of traffic and I didn't lose a lot of time going from A to B, was much more enjoyable.
Problem is, society thinks it has a right to everything and tthrowing money at technology and expensive infrastructure are the solutions, rather than education, enforcement and common sense.
If there's a greater chance of getting killed while riding your bike in heavy traffic, why wouldn't you consider riding on a side street that runs parallel to the main artery you normally ride on, scared of getting lost?
Is it because you have a right, or you are naive and don't comprehend the dangers of the real and physical world as it relates to the human condition?
    (duh........, ahhhhh..........., duh)
Same goes for 4 wheelers and truckers, don't take your eyes off the physical world, don't take chances or do stupid things because you're in a hurry, or think you have a right to do so.

    French truck
Italian actor (Lino Ventura) who played mostly in French movies.
Other side of truck has Yves Montand, another actor.

Wife knows these sort of things, I don't.

    Another Scania with Lino Ventura:

When I have to ride on a busy route I stick to the sidewalk. I really don't care if I piss anyone off. There's being right and then there's bring dead right.

I agree that cyclists (specially when they are in a groups) are just too arrogant and ignorant.
They think they own the road, and the world, putting themselves and others at risk.
No respect for rules, no common sense.

Not all of them of course, but many.

But, if these side guards save a childs life..... I'm all for it.

Sure, children have to learn to live by the rules as well, and have to learn cope with the dangers in life
But ... they are children, and things like @daf105paccar experienced do happen.

Haven't most of us done some really stupid things as a child (or at later age?), but were lucky enough to get away with it?

Where I grew up, no. We avoided the main highway as much as possible. Being a small town we'd ride on the side streets but move onto the dirt shoulder if a car approached.

I live in a bigger city now (about 40,000ish people). There's only 2 dedicated bike routes I can think of off hand. I tend to just haul my bike to the wooded trails on the edge of town in my pickup when I go to ride.
