for those of you that have quilified or will qualify for the WIA program, you can use that program for more than just obtaining your CDL. the program will also pay for you to obtain an associates degree (2 year) from an approved school in an approved course of study ( i am entering the criminal justice program).. if you are laid off, you probably qualify and you should check with your states workforce development center or your county job center. hope this helps some people. :biggrin_25519:

It will only pay so much of the program. For instance in Ct it paid only up to $3000. They school I attended cost $3800 so I had to fork over the other $800..

I had the same issue...MO would only pay $3000 toward me going to Crowder for a CDL. They wanted to send me to C1 in Springfield but I preferred to pay out-of-pocket to go to Crowder and I'm glad that I did.

I'm in a CDL school in the Dallas area using WIA and it's paying for mine completely.

How much is your schooling? And I think (could be wrong) that the price is set by the state as well..

The rate published by the school is $4200 but I'm hearing if you don't complete the program you are obligated to pay back $3500. Guess the State of Texas would only pay $3500 per student which the school must have accepted.

I thought Texas was giving all that money back like Alaska and North Carolina.

I was a laid-off worker and I tried to get WIA funding from my county for truck driving school. After a month and a half and showing up for 3 meetings, I was denied because I had a college education.

Reading in another post in this forum someone from my state (Ohio) getting funding with 3 DUIs and not a laid-off worker does not make my happy because I kind of believe it.

I went through the Texas Workforce Commission last year and they paid in full for me to go to C1 in Ft. Worth. I believe it showed my cost as 2995, or something close to that. Now the guys that were there through PAM and Swift ( I believe) had paperwork showing their cost to be around 6000 dollars. Seems a little shady for those going in through those companies, since they will owe almost twice what was paid for me to go through the same schooling. I don't know what kind of guarantees the schools have when a student goes in, does the training, starts working for one of these companies and then defaults on the loan. That is why I went the route I did. Of course I still have not found work, but I have my CDL and a nice little piece of paper saying I completed the school's course. So the job hunt is a pain, but I assume I am better off than if I was under a contract, at least from what I have read about these companies. I don't owe anyone any money, but I am unemployed for now. Not sure which is better: A kick in the groin or a kick in the head!!
