1.) I always considered myself to be one of the very elite when it comes to floating gears; it was my great joy to be able to go thru the gears once on a tranny and be able to run 'em from there on.
2.) It's always been part of what makes a truck a truck.
3.) If someone can't shift while driving, they really don't need to BE in a truck.
    4.) I only had THREE trannies I didn't like:
a.) A five speed cabover with manual steering POS.
b.) My ten speed on my equipment hauler after they rebuilt it too tight.
    c.) The confused gender type.

Steve: I tossed my notes after getting the WS prehire, but I think it was FFE. I may be wrong on that, but it was one of the reefer outfits.

Well, I know you weren't here to witness it, but this post made me laugh hysterically. Enough that Linda came in to find out if I had finally lost it.....

I love it! Junior it is...... now that's funny, I don't care who you are. Can't wait for Lil' Man to meet him! Running the Pickle Express to Hopkins.... maybe we'll cross. Planning on taking my normal route to Lebanon, then I might just shoot the 218. Where you gonna be?

    Holler back!

    Hey bud!

No worries. Actually, I really miss shifting. I can't say that I miss it when I am in Chicago or Atlanta, but there is just something about the shift that make the experience complete.

On the flip side, sorta nice to have Lil' Man doing the work for me when I am trying to get down that first cup of coffee.

I reckon the shifting thing is sort of a machismo thing. (oh boy, here comes the hate mail....) My thoughts are that it is sort of like seeing a country western star wearing a baseball cap or a bandana with tennis shoes instead of a cowboy hat and boots. It's odd, and not something you would naturally expect, but the music still sounds the same.

So am I anything less for having an automatic in my truck? One might think. But am I getting the loads there ontime? Yup. Am I getting the loads there intact? Yup. Am I getting there safely? Obviously. Can I get that big old 53 footer into some tight spots and through some tight streets? Yup (and I have photographic proof of that). So other than the fact that I got assigned an automatic rather than a 10 speed, I don't see the difference.

It's a matter of preference, especially when you are actually given a choice. One thing I do have to say to the positive is that driving this automatic has allowed me the opportunity (advantage) to spend more time paying attention to manuevering the truck. I am sure that the next one I get won't be an auto (because the company has so few in the fleet). Looking forward to that, but I sure will miss Lil' Man (he's a good ol' truck).

I guess this actually covers the reply for Red too....

I would reconsider, try using a feminine name, like they do with ships and planes, etc. Sometimes using masculine can sound all.... er.... wrong... hehe!:biggrin_2559:
Sorry...J/K guys!:biggrin_25525: some mind gravitate to the gutter i guess.

Notice I said "if someone CAN'T shift, they don't belong in a truck", not doesn't WANT to shift! No slighting on you, Scooter.
Another point comes to mind is that it's something to do besides just sit there holding the wheel...heheh, hint hint...
