Volvo 780 making huge grinding noise when make slightly right turn

I agree with oldironfan ( a lot) and could be a hydraulic growl, like the pump is sucking air from somewhere. There's really nothing to "grind" in the steering. Is the PS oil all bubbly?
Now that I thought of it, a bad wheel bearing? Better get THAT checked toot-sweet.

 

Did you change power steering filter and fluid?

 

A few questions -

1 - when you say grinding noise, what exactly do you mean? Like a rubbing of metal against stone, like on a gravel road or like a slow grinder?

2 - how fast are you moving when you make the right turn?

2a - does this happen with the truck standing still?

3 - how far do you move the steering wheel? 30 degrees, 45 degrees, 90 degrees?

4 - did the mechanic actually road test the truck?

5 - did you make sure that everything is secure under the hood and not rubbing against anything?

6 - did the mechanic actually check the wheel bearings and brakes first?

 

Did he check the power steering lines? Maybe the return is swollen shut?

I had the same issue on my 770 couple of years ago, my mechanic fixed it by welding something, I don't remember what it was, I'll try not to forget and ask him

 

if your front end is greasable (not all are anymore, grease the ever loving #### out of the king pins and drag link. Does it get any worse after it rains? We have had these issues come thru the shop before and it's usually steering components lacking lubricant/worn out.

 

Wheel bearings? Is the rear end disengaging on turns?

 

How did you fix it?
