In a desperate moment, I called to ask about a job flatbedding there, iirc I was offered 34cpm with years of experience.

I can't be the only one who has seen their trucks looking shabbier than Swift.

I'm not judging the people, I'm judging the company.

Ya know, what works for one person would be a crime to another.

Here's my take on WE. They can't be too bad, they have how many trucks in the road, and how many drivers. All those drivers can't possibly hate their jobs. Some are probably very happy there. $.34 a mile? Might be like hitting the lottery to some. Others, not so much.

Same with Swift. They have a bad rep, and with good reason. But, can they really be that bad, if they have people flooding orientation every week at their Network of terminals?

Don't judge a book by its cover.

Sure, the way out for some people. I started with Swift to get my Ls, so I get it. And yeah anyone who is in a bad situation, like I was, might think it's just what they need.

Let us not pretend it is a good company, however, otherwise why aren't we all trying to work there.

The OP stated that people were whining about their trucks being in and out of the shop, having seen many of their trucks, loading in the same places I have, I'm not surprised. The OP also stated they were whining about low pay, I've made more money than I do now in trucking, though I can still say that I'm paid pretty fairly.

34cpm or anything close to it is a bad joke for flatbedding. I'm sure they have in company raises or what have you, but I doubt it is close to fair for the industry if that is where they start the pay scale.

I think of WE like I think of any bottom feeding mega: if you need help getting started, if you royally ####ed up career, or if you just need to grind out your experience, it is a place for you to go to get some money flowing. Not a place to say is amazing and stay for 20 years, because if you do, you're delusional.

Oh, I'm not saying they're a good company, and I'd never go there. But, my standards in an employer are pretty high at this point. But like you said, for a person in a tough spot, WE or Swift might be a godsend.

I guess another way to look at it is this: WE and Swift kind of provide a service to those in a tough spot (giving a person achance to better themselves) . They might also keep a wrecker company or ten in business. And the parts people at the stealerships and so on. And if someone is content to stay there for 20 years, who are we to judge?
