New AZ Driver

Just finished up school and got my AZ yesterday. Have handed out multiple resumes today, but wanted to get some feedback on where the best places to apply to are for entry level drivers in and around the Peterborough area, as well as Belleville, Trenton, Oshawa, Ajax, Pickering. I'll do any job, AZ/DZ, straight truck, wahtever. I don't wanna be out of truck for too long, would like to get right back into it. I'm not looking to get rich, just want to get the experience that seems necessary with almost all companies (don't know how you're supposed to get experience if noone will hire you though) Thanks for any help and tips you can give me. Will also consider living on a camp out west and driving gravel truck or hauling supplies in the oil patch.

Well, I'm starting to get some leads! I've only been AZ licensed for 2 days and have probably handed out 100 resumes and made even more contacts. I am quickly finding out that it isn't easy to break into this business, I believe it is all about actually going in and speaking with the employers/recruiters face to face. I found a local company that does OTR that has taken all of my info and is sending it off to their insurance company to see if they will approve me. My abstract is clean as well as my CVOR. I'm supposed to hear back from them by next week. Bonus is my good friends brother in-law works in dispatch so I have that going for me. Also took a shot in the dark with another company that distinctly states on their website they only take drivers with 3+ years of experience, they want to see me tomorrow with all of my necessary documents, license, drivers abstract, CVOR abstract and criminal record check. Was very surprised they would even consider me, makes me wonder if some of these companies just put that criteria on their website to weed out the not so ambitious crowd. I will update with how my situation unfolds. My goal is to have a job within at at least 2 weeks of graduation, so far I am 2 days out. I really want this, the first tiem I drove a truck I knew this is what I wanted to do for a living. Wish me luck!! Hopefully I'll see you

Well, things aren't going as I had hoped. I had an interview at a Home Hardware that would be about a 120km round trip everyday that pays $12 an hour. I also had another interview today at a factory which is the same wage but a 5 minute walk from my house. I'm thinking I may have to take the factory job until something else pops up as far as driving goes. I wanna drive for HH but I just can't afford the gas every day with taking home such a small wage. If the hours were there it would be different but it's only 37.5 hours a week. Was hoping to come back with some better news, but thems the breaks in this economy I guess.

 

Nope, don't have my fast card, wouldn't have a problem getting it, I have no criminal record whatsoever. I'm still waiting to hear back from one lomg haul place in town, and a couple dump truck jobs. The one dump job I have a good reference from the company owners good friend so I'm hoping that gets me in. I don't even care if it's seasonal, I just want the experience! Until then I'll keep working this ###### factory job I have. I'm just so bummed out because this is what I want to do for a career, but noone will even look at me, it is very discouraging.
