I came around the corner and there were about six 18 wheelers, two bobtails and three trailers. This "truck stop" is behind the Vitamin Shoppe at 7069 Arundel Mills Circle, Hanover, Maryland. The Vitamin Shoppe is one of the stand alone retail shops along the ring road just outside of Arundel Mills Mall, five miles southwest of BWI - Marshall Airport.
Are more and more of these "ad hoc" truck stops popping up?
I stumbled into another "ad hoc" truck stop ...

I think that's more a case of their driving hours were up and they had to pullover before the qualcomm squawked at them. Could be wrong though.

When there aren't any actual truck stops, we park where we can. I think what happens is one driver parks somewhere, then another parks next to him cause there's already one truck there so it must be OK, then another pulls in cause two are there, etc. etc.
Until the truck parking issue is addressed, this is going to happen. We gotta park somewhere.GAPrincess and simplyred1962 Thank this. -
Truck stop = wherever the truck stops
luvtheroad, Texas-Nana and Working Class Patriot Thank this. -
I'm going to ad that spot into my truck stop directory. It's good to know about such a place in that area.
HFC Thanks this. -
Well, add another spot ...
7351 Assateague Drive
Jessup, MD 20794
This is where you will find a shopping center with MOM's (My Organic Market) and the soon to be opened (May 7, 2009) Ollie's Bargain Outlet.
I was driving down Assateague Drive from the Travel Centers of America truck stop towards US Route 1 and saw about ten trucks parked on this side (the side facing Assateague Drive). Ollie's is in the same shopping center but faces MD Route 175. -
Here's another place I have seen an "ad hoc" truck stop.
Far parking lot of the Burlington Coat Factory, between there and Sam's Club. Across Perry Parkway from the Gaithersburg Square Shopping Center with a 24 hour CVS drug store.
600 North Frederick Ave # A
Gaithersburg, MD 20877 -
Not really an ad hoc, more of a hidey hole for me I hang in before doing the nasty and heading into the big city.
Edgewater NJ has a Comfort Inn with a parking lot that's freaking huge. The hotels parking lot is actually part of a shopping center that butts up against the Hudson River. There is an "in season" fresh seafood restaurant called Binghamton's Floating Paddlewheel Restaurant. One of those "on the water" kinda deals. There is a little by the slice pizza joint in the shopping center that's not bad eating either. Take your pick into the hell that is NYC; to the south 4 miles is the Lincoln Tunnel, or 2 miles north is the GW bridge.
I have parked in there many times, and have never had a problem, its actually a pretty safe area and lots of foot traffic along the river front. Last time I was there was the same day the plane crashed into the river. I have always checked into the hotel while staying there, I don't know what problems you would have otherwise?
One quick Caveat, River Rd that leads to the Comfort Inn isn't the most truck friendly thing ever. Steep hills, lots of traffic "depending" on time of day, and the curve off the highway is unGodly tight if you aren't paying attention. I am sure there is a much better way in, but I haven't taken the time to figure it out...
If you look it up on Google Maps (toggle on Satellite) 725 River Rd., Edgewater, NJ‎ ; the great big white roof x3 is a tennis club. The floating thing is the SeaFood Restaurant. North of the restaurant and east of the tennis club is the hotel. Google Maps w/ the satellite image button toggled on shows it very well. Oh, and on south is the shopping center, I didn't find much useful in there. And the rest, is one big booty of a parking lot. Come to think of it, I have never seen another truck parked in there... -
I drove by a little spot in town (Cape Girardeau) today and noticed four or five trucks parked out there. It's a gravel parking lot next to a rarely used convention center. It isn't very big and was full just with those four or five trucks in it but is in a great location. All within a mile of it are a mall, a hospital (with an attached fitness center that would probably include a shower with a day pass), a bowling ally, Olive Garden, Burger King, Pizza Inn buffet, Steak n Shake, Taco Bell, O'Charlies, Ruby Tuesday, Logans, Best Buy, a Chinese all you can eat buffet, Red Lobster, Cracker Barrel, Texas Roadhouse, Popeye's chicken, Panera Bread, and it's almost right across the street from El Acopulco which is my favorite restaurant in town.
The spot is right up the road from Wally World. Just go east on Rt. K/William street after getting off I55 on exit 96 then make a right on Mt. Auburn. It'll be on the right just before you get to the next stoplight.
I never noticed that place before until I started visiting this forum.

Last week I ran into the same type of thing. It was in Madison, WI behind a Best Buy.
