Just curious what the normal pay is during the training period. I got offered a job today (long haul cross border),out for 5-6 days at a time. I would be out on the road with my trainer for 8 weeks, and was told I would get paid $50 a day until my training period was over, then I would go to a regular, paid by the mile once on my own. I really want and need the experience, but I just can't afford to take that kind of a pay cut for 2 months, not to mention I would somehow have to eat, shower, do laundry, and pay all my bills on $250 a week, and that is before the government takes theur cut!! Please don't tell me this is the norm...

Depends on the company and your level of experience. I made $100 a day, but I had 14yrs of driving at the time, student drivers got paid $75 a day. Training periods are kinda rough, but once that is done it's all good.

Try to take food with you, if your trainer will let you. Showers are free if you fuel.

Afraid to say this is probly the norm. But don't quote me on that.

well, i turned it down. I have to pay out around $1500 a month in bills so there is no way I could take a paycut like that for 2 months. I'm starting to think my dream of being a driver is coming to a screeching halt.

Don't make the same mistake all new drivers make. You won't start out on top. You have to work your way there. If you want to be a driver you might have to sacrifice a little in the beginning to get to where you want to be. I know I did and every other driver on here probly has also.

trust me, I dont have a problem taking it up the hoop for a few months in order to work my way up, but $50 a day? Gimme a break! If I was to take a 12 hour day (being generous here) and divide that by $50, that's $4.16 an hour! That would be less than HALF of what minimum wage is here in Ontario! That is criminal if you ask me. I would expect at least minimum wage during my training period. Just sounds like a scam to me is all.

Sounds pretty low to me. What company offered you that?

Keep looking. Pay varies from company to company. Stay away from the "lease to own" companies tho.

I'd rather not say, not into dragging names through the mud, but this company told me that is all I would get anywhere else. I was grateful for the offer, considering the state of the industry, but as I said, just not financially possible. The job I have right now lets me just squeak by with my monthly bills, so the smart thing to do is just hold onto it until I get called back to my real job. God I hate this recession bullshiat
