Hi all. Well, 8 months into our team driving experience I let my guard down. We have a spotless record of on times, being courteous, getting along with our DM's, etc. Backing and maneuvers are progressing well; my spouse and I spot each other and use cells to communicate if needed. We always pull off if feeling tired, and drive with safety & courtesy to the other drivers at all times. Passed 2 DOT's, and pretrip as we should. We have safely driven through ice storms and got to safe parking, through tornado warnings, pull-over thunderstorms, and white out snow. Growing up in NE Ohio has helped with all that. So we apply what we know from 30+ years of driving to our new challenge, and SLOW DOWN when needed!

Until, that is, I got in a hurry at an extremely busy truck stop and backed into a parked tractor. About an 8" by 2" scar, very minor damage, but I did it. O/O was waycool about it, but he did lecture me a bit about not doing this stuff when tired etc., and letting other impatient drivers intimidate me. And I deserved it.

This is our first, we (I) did not take the time to spot, and angry truckers were on me like flies while I was trying to back because they wanted to get to the exit. I got in a hurry. I figured “Well, the spot is by far no worse than some docks we have gone too, so I should be OK.” Stupidity of brain took over, and now I have an accident on my record.

    *sigh*

I suppose it will be on my DAC now and we will get fired as we are newbies.

    Thanks, anyway, for listening.:biggrin_2557:

    Schmuck, the newbie.

Don't beat yourself up too hard over this. I can absolutely relate to your situation. I did the same thing after only 6 months, except I hit an O/O's tractor bending his mirror and his stack on the driver's side. PAM didn't fire me, and I doubt the company you're with will fire you because of this either.

Naw, bat, don't worry about the DAC as something THAT minor won't go on there and if it did I would be really surprised! Like ScareCrow said, don't beat yourself up man...it is INEVITABLE for something to happen with as much crap as truckers go through each day. In 12.5 years, I actually did that myself...well I BARELY bumped into a driver's west-coast mirror and LUCKILY it didn't even scratch it and I got out talked to him we both laughed and said forget it, no harm done we all do it. I was like PHEW. Luckily I was going SLOW and DID get out to look when I saw that...IF I had kept going....it would have been much worse.

I agree though...one time the guard is left down...that's when it happens. So I learned after that to NEVER let it down again no matter what. Hold your head up, chalk it to experience and roll on man!

I agree your job should be safe. Sounds pretty minor compared to what I read of and hear of. Sooner or later there's a good chance something will happen, better something minor in a parking lot.

Thanks for sharing though. I've come pretty #### close to doing the same thing more than once and I can honestly say reading stories like this has helped me avoid it. When I start feeling confident I come back here and remind myself how easily it can happen.

PAM did put my incident on my DAC, but it was like a year after I quit before it showed up.

Most companies wait until you're gone to post a report on your DAC. It saves them time, and provides a complete record the first go round.

It won't be an issue for the original poster either, unless he/she gets canned.

That's why it is always better to apply for a new job, before you leave the old one. The DAC report gets pulled...before the company you leave post one.

Thanks for the kind words! :biggrin_25519:

I talked to our DM a minute ago and he said we are fine, not to worry about our jobs. We go back out Monday so my eyes are off the floor again. (Incident was last Sunday in Jersey, our first time there) I did not bring up the DAC tho...

Yeah s*** can happen, but we all want to be perfect angels out here I suppose. And yes, my post was in part to remind us all how easily one can get complacent, especially newcomers, and it can all happen in a fraction of a second! Everything is cool, then you hear that horn blast...YIKES.

Many seasoned drivers told me they have days like this too, so I feel a "little" better about it all. (Not much though) LOL

    *whew*

    Lessons learned!

    Still employed for now Batdog

It happen's to the best of driver's, don't beat yourself up over it. I've had a few close calls myself. After a few months call the safety dept of your company and see if they have you down for preventable acident. Just try to learn from the simple mistakes. Keep your head up and be safe out there.

You've been driving all day in stopNgo traffic, sun has set, you are tired and hungry. You pull into a truckstop thats filling up quickly. Impatient dingleberries without the decency to even turn off their headlights are hounding you from all sides.

I'm old school. If I see a driver struggling to get into a spot, I will get out to help him. There are alot of pricks out there...that guy struggling to back in may be a pretty good hand. Gotta do what I can to make sure the good hands stick around. Plus its cheap insurance that my truck wont get hit.
