N14 oil leak

    2002 Cummins N14 Celect plus. Oil is leaking considerably from the rear of the engine. It looks to be in the area of the rear main seal but I have heard that the pan can warp and cause this. Supposedly there is a clamp that can fix this. Has anyone had an issue with this? Thanks

    You have to be careful when assuming where an oil leak is coming from on an N-14 in the rear. Unlike most engines, N-14 rear mains sit in their own housing that bolts up to the block....and the flywheel housing bolts around that to the block. The back oil pan bolts bolt up to the rear main housing.....which if that leaks, it can leak oil to the bottom of the flywheel housing making it look like a rear main.

    Look up in there with a flashlight to the back of the oil pan....very back....and see if there is oil coming from there. Most likely, thats what it is. 2002...........you already have that clamp welded to the pan.

    Check the cam follower seals also, they started leaking right before I bought my truck and the driver thought it was also the rear main

    Finally got the truck to a place that I could pressure wash it to look for the oil leak. Got underneath and began looking in all the suspected area and while it seemed to be leaking from near the rear pan or rear main to my surprise I kept tracing it to the front of the motor. Once all the filth was removed to allow further inspection of the front I found some brainiac had left front cover gasket out anf tried to pack it with JB weld. It held for a while since it had been six months since that work had been done.
    Amazing how oil will track into every nook and cranny and make you think its coming from one area when its actually coming from the opposite area. Not sure of the extent of dis-assembly to replace the gasket but the manuals are on order and its got to be better than having to pull the tranny to replace the rear main. Thanks for the assistance.

    I got my manuals and spent the better part of 2 days fixing the truck. The cost of parts was $9.07 plus fluids. Thanks for all the input.

    Hey, thats not bad for an O/O. Front cover jobs aren't easy. Maybe the last guy thought it was only a two hour job, and look now, it had to be done again. Take your time and do it right!!!

    Also the compressor, fuel pump, power steering pump, oil pump and accessory drive gaskets. I thought I did ok for a fist time deisel mechanic. I spent a good bit of time studying each diagram to insure it was done right and keep me from having to redo anything. Don't worry about the comment I'm happy with my time frame. Although I still have to determine where the other leak is coming from. Seems to be on the drivers side above the starter but not higher than the ECM. Gotta get a spot mirror in there and start hunting.
