I have been having some weird problems with this truck. 2004 W900, 525 ISX, 18sp. First, the fan wouldnt disengage after engaging for any reason (ie: jakes, temp rising, A/C...), now it runs constantly. I have changed the fan control solenoid. I cant find any leaks. Any ideas?? Before I could shut engine off and restart to shut off fan. Now it runs constantly...
Second, my air compressor runs constantly. This is my first Cummins and im not use to the knocking sound it makes. kinda embarrasing. What happens is, the air builds, pops off, then green needle on gauge immediately starts dropping to around 90 pounds then compressor starts til cycle repeats itself over and over. If I dont set idle to high it hardly builds air to pop off. The red needle stays pretty constant while the green does its deal over and over. I have rebuilt air dryer and replaced the turbo valve just below the compressor due to leaking. Cant hear any air leaks anywhere else. Dryer was pretty oily, but it looked like original one from factory. Is the compressor supposed to knock like that? Could the 2 problems be related since the fan needs certain amount of air to disengage? HELP please!
Oh yeah, governor was changed also.....
weird troubles with my 2004 KW, ISX

Well, lets start with the fan. If it is locked on all the time, the easiest thing to do is disconnect the air line to the fan from the solenoid and apply shop air to it. If it disengages you know the problem is somewhere else. The air system leaking down from the green side should be the primary system. Most trucks the primary system is only used for your rear brakes. The fan should get it's air from the secondary system. So I would guess you have two separate problems. If the system is leaking down that fast there are sometimes when the leak is so bad it makes no sound. Believe me! Again applying shop air to the entire truck at the governor (the line to the wet tank) will charge the whole system and hopefully without the engine running you can track down what should be an easy leak to find. Good luck...

Those air compressors are a little noisey but nothing to be ashamed of. After you eliminate the fan hub itself, try unplugging the A/C high pressure sensor and see if that makes a difference. If there haven't been any check engine lights than I would assume that none of the engine temp sensors are keeping the fan on.
When checking for your air leak, make sure to check for leaks with the parking brakes released as well as set....block your wheels. Also hold down the brake pedal with a full air system and listen for leaks... -
A buddie had the fan on all the time with his volvo and isx and ended up replacing the ecm. Compressor running all the time means air leak somewhere, bad valve, air dryer, or line

Do you have a constant purge air dryer? that is probably what you are hearing they purge the whole time the compressor is running.

Update!
I developed a weird sound from the turbo yesterday and took the truck back the dealer that installed it 5 months ago. Turns out it was just a leaky hose, but while I was there, I told them about my problem and they began a long journey of tracking down my air leak. They hooked it up to their Cummins computer and got the fan to engage/ disengage properly. Then spent 3 hrs looking for a possible leak somewhere that was causing the green needle to drop so rapidly. They found a couple of small leaks around tanks, but nothing serious. Then the mechanic checked one more thing. Hooking up a manual gauge to the governor and putting air to the hose that runs from the fan solenoid to the fan he discovered a major leak in the hub itself, right where it pops out when engaged. After rebuilding the hub I am happy to report it solved BOTH my problems. Now it holds air nicely and my fan disengages like it should. Compressor is no longer running constantly and I can now use my jakes with confidence. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions.
