I'll get off the hype, and state my argument simply, and it goes back to the premise of the thread... ...from my (and other's) observation from the cab, a percentage of people steering 4-wheeler's down the highway are not held accountable by the State, to assure they are in good physical health. My belief is that money and politic's play a heavy role in allowing the masses drive without concern for keeping unhealthy driver's from behind the wheel. "Qualification" is a matter of passing an eye test and answering a few rules-of-the-road questions in most cases, especially here in Florida.

I soooooo agree with you. About a month and a half ago, my husband was traveling behind a car and it was behind a pickup pulling a flat bed goose neck. He was a safe distance from the car, thank god. The pickup turns on a blinker to turn off the highway onto a county road, begins to slow, and the car slams into the trailer. He saw no break lights come on on the car before the impact. Hubby immediately stops, grabs his fire extinguisher and runs to assist the driver of the car. Hood completely crumpled up and the windshield was pushed into her face. FF two days. I look in the local newspaper for that area, and find out that the old lady was 93 years old!!! Hubby thought that she was in her 80s.
What the heck is a 93 year old woman doing driving a car???
There are drivers out there driving the 4 wheelers that should not be, and someone needs to regulate them.

In Illinois, they have annual testing after they reach a certain age. The annual testing is a start, but then again who knows. They do not check out their health history enough like the CDL. -
Yeah, this was in Iowa. I'm sure the family is reconsidering her driving privileges now. We took moms car away after her TIA, no way were we going to let her drive anymore. I googled it for Illinois and it is not as tough as I thought.
Illinois has some of the nation's toughest restrictions on older drivers, joining New Hampshire in requiring a road test for renewals after age 75. Illinois also is among at least 15 states that have an accelerated renewal schedule for older drivers, requiring renewals every two years from age 81 to 86, and every year after that.

Perhaps in the future IQ test will be required also. And what about language issues. Huh as anyone had to deal with a driver who's english is bad or non existent. There are a great many issues here as well and my goodness they want fit drivers.... Have they seen truckstop food before

They need to gather more facts about the whole thing like many drivers work tough schedules that raise your BP and frequently turn to energy drinks and coffee to contend with fatigue wich also cause spike in BP. Many sides to the issue to consider than just what is being presented. They may find the driving workforce shrink rapidly and unemployment go up a bit. -

I strongly believe we need to start screening our older drivers for dementia and Alzheimer's, some 97 year olds are more "with it" than some 67 year olds. Age does not determine ability.Click to expand...Socy Grad Thanks this. -
