Hello to all.. I have been reviewing posts and gathering information on joining the Professional Truck Drivers career field.. I'd like to begin by thanking all of you who take the time to "give back" through your contributions to this forum.. I live in Las Vegas, Nevada, 48 yrs young, widowed for 6 yrs and my sons are all grown.. I'm ready, willing and able to go into this field.. I love to drive, love the open road personally.. I have researched and am leaning towards going with Central Refrigerated (SLC, Utah) mostly based on the fact that they only require a 1 year committment rather the extended terms other carriers ask for (2 or 3 yrs).. I'd rather have options after 1 year and no money owed.. I've read the good, bad and the ugly.. My attitude is positive and my demeanor is balanced.. I'm courteous and generally a happy person.. I'd like to know about the good experiences you've had within this industry.. I'd like hear about why you love it still.. I'd like to know about great benefits offered.. How can I best prepare for a truly life changing experience?... Finally my big question.. Is it truly better to go in as an OO or Company Diver?.. Why?.. Thanks and God Bless You all..

My opinion, Company until you understand all the nuances associated with being an Owner Operator. There are so many things that come into play as factors when dealing with your own equipment, I think it's just better to learn them as you go, then decide if you want to take the jump once you are ready and financially sound enough.

    I second that emotion !!!!!

There's far, far to much to learn about before considering O/O.

It is also a huge benefit if you do not have a mortgage or rent payment. Use a relatives or friends address as a place of residence, if you can. You'll be living in your truck anyway, so why pay for something you will seldom use. ( Just something to consider ) !!

Some company's will push you really hard to sign up for a lease, but I strongly advise against doing that unless and until you are ready for it.

    GOOD LUCK !!

I'm happy to see another new face coming into the trucking industry. Someone that seems like they have the common sense it takes to live and work in this field. Your thinking about joining the only job that will drag you to the end of sanity, till you can't keep your eyes open any more and you blood is boiling. Then....... You will see a beautiful sunset as you crest over the top of a long mountain, or watch the biggest waterfall you have ever seen fall from the sky and almost looks like it will fall onto your truck as you pass. All of a sudden, you will forget about all those blood boiling issues and moments that you hated so much at the time and it will remind you of why truck driving is truely the best job on the planet.
It reminds me of my son, lol... No sleep, dealing with other people that will always tell you they know more than you, worrying 24/7, never getting a break. But if given a second chance, you would do it all over again without question.
Good luck, god bless... And don't give up right away, let it pass for a while and it will get better...

Go comapny for sure- We have thought about buying a truck. Still we dont feel we know enough, we've been out 2 years. Her Dad has 3 million miles been driving 40 years. Still he is company, best part is when the truck brakesdown call them up snad say "trucks broke I'll be in the motel call me when its ready."

I know there is alot of money in OO, but nothing is free, and all Owner Operators earn every cent of it. I just dont want the headache.

Yes this job is the best, we love it. Yeah you'll have those days when you say to yourself. "They dont pay me enough for this crap."

Those are the days when the truck blows a drive tire in the middle of Wyoming in february, and it takes the tire guy 15 hours to get there, because they closed the road. You didnt fuel at the last truckstop, and you have to set the clock for every two hours so you freeze to death. Hopin it doesnt take much longer.

Then there will be days when you say to yourself " I can't beleive they actually pay to do this."

Those are the days, when its dawn in Utah. Mid July, the sun comes up and hits the rocks. You have your favorite music on. It's Sunday so it's only you out there. Thats when it hits you how much fun the job is. Trust me more often than not you'll have those "I can't beleive they pay for this" days. Just keep you cool, and realize all the BS will pass, and in a few hours you'll be truckn along without a care.

Too many of these guys out there let it get to them. They yell and scream on the radio, bullie you on the road, weave in and out of traffic. Let them have their heartattack. Sit back get comfortable and enjoy the job, I'll bet you what ever you want. Those same guys that pass you going 75 in a 65, they will pass you 3 more times- they end up stopping because they get too stressed or use too much fuel. I see it all the time- super truckers with the million leds, and chrome out to prove how fast they can move freight- they pass me 3 or more times a night. I just relax, set the cruise, sip my coffee, listen to music. Or just listen to the road, I'll drive for 7-8 hours straight. Sometimes more, I'm usually pulling into the truckstop, and parked 3 rows down from Billy bigrig that passed me all night.

    Welcome to truckin'
