After 25 years in the printing industry I have decided to follow in my late father-in-laws steps and try my hand at truck driving. Looks like I'll be starting class in July in Kansas City. I've heard good things about the school so I am confident that I've made the right choice. I've read a couple of reports that indicate the trucking industry is about to see a resurgence, but a lot of what I read on the boards makes me wonder. Hope I'm getting into this at the right time and will have a long prosperous future in trucking. I look forward to chatting with others here over the next months and years.

You couldn't get in it at a worse time . All you may get into is school .Freight is at its lowest level in five years and all carriers are reducing their fleet size . Even Werner keeps reducing their fleet .
http://www.ttnews.com/articles/basetemplate.aspx?storyid=21721 . But their freight is still declining which means fewer miles for drivers . Yet Werner continues hiring . Why ? Because drivers keep quitting . All carriers have hundreds of applications on file . Prosperous ? The oversupply of drivers created by driving schools exploiting desperate people has allowed carriers to further exploit them by lowering starting rates to $.22 to $.24 cents a mile . Then many get less than 2,000 miles a week . Read the trainer threads and the "Rohel Prehire Means No Hire " thread . Many trucking school graduates have their career ended before it starts .

Just keep an eye on Department Of Labor unemployment figures for the trucking industry and this .
    http://www.bts.gov/xml/tsi/src/datadisp_table.xml
People got all excited when freight went up 2% in February . Back down in March to lowest level in 7 years now . There will be no quick recovery .

RickG I've seen your comments on many of the posts I've looked at and they are always negative. Do you mind telling me what your story is and what has gotten you this way? Are you driving now and if so is there anything you like about it that you can share? You have very good information and I do thank you for it; it's important to get the entire picture..... just curious about you.

Hello and welcome. My advice: If your father in law knows a o/o whose insurance will take you, beg for a job from him.
