I work for a private fleet that makes private label foods, so our freight is pretty constant. This is our slow period and I'm still pulling in 2100-2800 a week. This week I pulled 2100 in 4 days.
It all depends on where you go and what you haul. Groceries are a pain in the ###, but they are always going to be there, and as long as the company keeps paying me, I'm gonna haul them. -
You've hit a very good point. Do your homework and find a good company that does not haul freight to pay their bills. IOW's find a company that hauls their own product. I've found that most of these companies want good trained drivers and will keep them once they are working. With gasoline there's just too many liabilities that can cost the company millions of dollars so they want the best driving their trucks.

There's no way i'm hauling gas or any hazmat tanker. For that matter tankers in general. i physically cannot do it.
i think food distribution is still doing good, but i can't/shouldn't do that right now as i have back problems and need to get that sorted out first. -
P.S. i think another area that is still doing good is pet food---i.e., petsmart and other pet type stores. Rover and/or Molly still have to eat too.
i wonder who has the Petsmart account? -
Another thing i thought of is---and this is not OTR, but a driving job nontheless is Porta-potties.
i think this line of work is still doing ok as everyone still has to....... you know. -
Actually I'd be willing to bet that the porta pottie bit is off right now to. Considering that their major customer are construction companies, and construction is way down. At least here where I am.
I know there are folks who would literally turn their nose up, pun intended, at hauling or servicing them. But hell, it is honest work. -
Exactly; It's steady work and if you can get past the "disgusting" aspect of the job(really it doesn't look that bad) it's a consistent paycheck and really the job doesn't look that difficult.
i considered this a few months ago. It looks like you'd be driving a 1ton truck or possible a medium duty.
Local. -
things are slow right now but they will pick up. I just don't know when.
until someone finds a better way there will always be a need for drivers, we just have to get through the slow times -
So how is everyone doing? Have things gotten better yet? I guess not
