Hello to all names jose and I've been driving on my own authority since jan and have at times been flustered with being tuned down for a load cuz they wanted a 53ft trl. And there have been times where I talk them into letting me take it anyways and it all fits? Lazy ######## probably didn't want to go through the trouble of finding out if my 48ft would be ok for the load. Anyhow I'm getting close to paying it off and was strongly leaning to get a 53ft reefer. I just wanted to get opioions from all the vets on here on if its worthwhile. Is it possible still to do decent with a 48? Oh yeah location matters I suppose I'm from boise idaho. Anyhow. Hoping to hear back soon you all have a good one

Still see a lot of them in the NE. My company still has some, but 99% is 53'. I see some QC notes on certain loads requiring 53' trailers, and pull a few loads the certainly couldn't be put into a 48, but for the most part it shouldn't be a problem in my opinion.

I'd strongly suspect you'd get very little for it on trade, unless it's a spread axle, which would help. Personaly, I still think a 48' reefer is more viable today than is a 48' van. Generaly speaking, perishable food is heavy, while asswipe and tampons are light. I too have gone through the drill of telling a broker that, yes, that load he "needs" a 53 footer for will fit in my 48'. I've had 28 skids in mine, all 28 on the floor, and none stacked.

A 53' reefer certainly offers more options on loads, but hard to say if going further in debt for 5 more feet makes the most sense. Kinda depends on how bad you need to get rid of the 48 due to it's age/condition, as well as how much more debt a new(er) 53 would entail.

Personaly, I believe a 50' spread axle is the best of both worlds, though few here may agree with this.

I actually do like the idea of a Cali legal spread longer than a 48 footer, what about Canada, though?

53s can be found probably more easily than a decent 48, though they will cost more. I have never looked into what it would actually cost to buy or lease 1 compared to a 48.

find a good produce brooker to work with instead of load board flunkies. 53 is the default setting and they all just automaticly put 53in there. There is no produce you can't fit in a 48 and still be plenty heavy.

The reefer itself is still in decent shape and as you stated a 48ft can take plenty of produce. I can gross right at 45,000 if I had to but I can be full of fuel lol. Normally though I like to be no heavier than 44k. I gotta get the company driver mentality out of my head I just drove a load from pasco wa down to springville ut and averaged a 7.5pg. I was amazed considering some of the grades I had to go up such as cabbage in oregon. I kept my speed right a 60. Well except for oregon lol. Anyhow my uncle works with a produce broker but not all his loads pay all that well and he's content to wait two or three days for a decent one. I can't do that. I mean ill do my reset when need be but if I got hrs I need to roll. Spread axles sound cool mines closed so when I'm over 30k or so I gotta go weigh is hauling frozen loads that much harder on my reefer. I try to get produce first but of course that's not always an option. 48ft dry van trls are practically worthless I think. Not to mention dry loads are not even paying squat. I have only hauled one good paying dry load from tql who most of the time pays cheap lol. Anyhow thank you all for your imput

There will be a lot of potatoes coming out of your area soon.

And they still use 45' trailers to load bulk potatoes. Not many of them 45's around anymore, but people still use them.

Everytime I tell someone the first thing to come out of their mouth is potato. Anyhow you guys are right a lot of spuds comming out of here. I think I will hold off on trying to get a 53ft reefer my 48 still has plenty of life left and if I do get up the nerve to get a 53 it won't be until the economy recovers if at all. A lot of people didn't seem to realize this was comming. Loan offices helping make fake income statments so someone could get a house they could not afford. And many other loose pratices and one word defines americas main problem GREED. I do admire the fact that the president was capping salaries for ceos of companies that got bailout money and rightfully so. Its so infurating to see wastefull goverment spending when most of us out here are just trying to hold on to what we have
