I just got approved for a truck and trailer. I am going to Houston to shop. What I would like to ask is what do I need in the way of ins just to drive the truck and trailer back home? I will be driving it from Houston to New Mexico.
Thanks, Gary

Do you already have a insurance agent lined up? They should be able to provide a "binder" to give you coverage while bringing the truck home on the temp tags. When I replaced my old truck I just transferred the ins and the dealer provided the temp tag.
Spankster1 Thanks this. -
No I didn't have an agent in mind. However, I sent an email to ooida asking the same question and the reply I got was, Physical Damage and non trucking liability. Did not get a quote yet. What I would really like to do is buy the truck and load it around Houston back this way but I have not applied for my auth yet so I will just drive it back here and eat the fuel. New Mexico has a law that says they have to do a vin inspection before I register it. So today I stopped at the Lordsburg POE and saw a state cop there that said any state cop or DOT can do the vin insp. The DMV here in Silver City is too small to park a rig and the people will not come out to the side of the road to insp it because of personal liability. Also the KFC here does not have the grilled chicken. Small town..... I am thinking of going ahead and getting everything as far as ins but don't want those payments showing up before I even get to hauling.

I did some work up in Silver City in the early 80's when the mine started switching from trains to haul trucks. We ate at the Red Barn a lot and they packed us lunches too.
I have been using SouthWest Truck Insurance for about the last 16 years. They have an office in Albuquerque and one in Phoenix. They have several different companys they can quote from. I personally have had a very good experience and relationship with them. They might be able to get you an idea what your ins will cost.
