Why do you want to do that?
What kind of nut do you have?
Did you check the inside wheel seal isn't damp/leaking.
Search,,

Best to check end play, Too tight it will burn up. I’ve heard Volvo’s are more sensitive to do. Don’t know for a fact though. Make sure you use the right specs.

Either way, make sure you put a jack under the axle for safety!, but no, you don’t need to pull the tire off, just get it off the ground.
You’ll want the load off the bearings to torque them up. -
When I jacked it up to grease kingpins and shoved on the tire to check for slack in kingpins I figured out the bearing had a little slack ...Took it to local shop and they found Pitts on the bearing so I'm getting bearings replaced on both sides..
xsetra and MartinFromBC Thank this. -
They will adjust the bearings for you.
If you need to do it yourself at some point you have to follow the procedure.
When they are adjusted correctly you will feel a small amount of play in the wheel. This is because when the bearings get hot they expand. That's why if you make them too tight you burn the bearings out.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
general wheel end play spec is 0.001-0.005``
follow the wheel end procedures from the manufacturer. just remember, ***** you must rotate the tires while preforming the tightening procedure. this will ensure the bearings sit properly on the spindle.MartinFromBC Thanks this. -
The problem I’ve had when using the 2 nut system, is the final torque on big nut tightens it all up, sometimes too much. Must be slop in the threads on inner bolt, or something. I checked out the single nut system, much better set up, torque, loosen and finger tight. Install locking snap ring, finished.
MartinFromBC, Dino soar, spsauerland and 1 other person Thank this.
