I love to drive but hate to work for scrub companies. I worked for a o/o who just went out of buisness, drugs/gambling. Thats where he put his money. Anyway, I had it made. 30% of gross. I booked my own loads. Went home when I wanted stayed as long as I wanted. Fueled where I wanted, ran legal if I wanted. You can see how this goes, it was like it was my own truck but not all the profits. I have enough money to buy a used truck but not a newer used truck. Here's my question. Do I have to have my own authority and stuff to buy a truck and then lease on with a company. I guess I do if I want to book my own loads but what do I need to do to buy a truck then lease on with someone. Also is there an age limit on the truck for companies. Thanks for any help

BigRigJoe is my kind of driver!

You dont have to have your own authority to go out and buy a rig. Money talks.

HOWEVER, if you are going to lease your rig on to a company, check with that company first. They may have specs that your truck has to abide by (in my case, wheelbase, 5th wheel height, no more than 10 years old and under 19000 lbs.)

Wish you much success, my friend.

Folks can you entertain a dummy for a second?

OK you bought the truck in Atlanta but your company you lease to is in Des Moines, and they are supplying the plates.

You live 250 miles from Atlanta, does the truck just sit on the lot until you get plates? Can you drive the darn thing home? Do you wait for plates in the mail from your carrier? Or can you get temps for a bob tail?

I don't know why this eludes me, sorry to interupt but I hope this adds to the post as a valid topic,..

I am actually looking to do the same thing within a yr or so. I have basically decided to either get my own authority or lease on to Landstar. most companies have age restrictions for the truck and most are less than 5 yrs old. I know a couple guys leased to Landstar and they seem to have it going right over there. Pretty much sounds like what you did before book your own loads go when and where you wanna go and its up to you to make it or fail. Best of Luck to you and start a thread once you get going to keep us up to date on your progress.

I'm entertaining the exact same thought. I've always been an entrepreneur. I've got a landscaping business that brings in $15,000 to $20,000 a year and am looking to do something during the down season, October through May. I'm divorced with no kids and have the money to buy a used truck. Last Winter I drove for a local company running an end dump trailer and moving equipment with a lowboy. I would like to buy a used International tractor (9200i or 9400i) with air ride, sliding 5th wheel, wet kit, and dual 150 gallon tanks. I'm looking to spend anywhere between $8,000 and $13,000). The truck will sit 6 months out of the year while i'm mowing, spraying, and landscaping. During those months I will be nickel and diming it, fixing it up, etc. Then in the Winter months I want to lease on to a company (preferrebly local). Once the grass comes back ill terminate my lease and park it again. This way I can work for myself year round, doing what I love. Like you, I don't know where to start, other than buying a truck.

Buying the truck is the easy part... Finding steady work is the hard part.. L/S isn't the holly grail of O/O companies.. there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes.. politics, butt kissing, ect.. (Good loads never make it to the load board.. agents put them on their "buddies" and their own trucks first..)

Have you applied to L/S? Will they even take you? What kind of trailer are you wanting to pull?

Getting your own authority is pretty easy but your gonna need deeper pockets... Things like buying your base plates, insurance, workmans comp, ect.. How are you going to buy fuel? Credit card? or get your own ComData or TCH card? (more $$)

As for getting the truck home.. The dealer will provide you with a temp tag to transport it... You just cannot haul anything, just transport it like a personal vehicle. To haul freight you'd need the cargo insurance, DOT#.. & stuff.. (trailer??)

    Hope this helps?

you don't need your authority to lease to a company. you need your authority to run yourself and not lease to a company.

If you plan on leasing onto a company, what would I need? A tractor, $750,000 liability, $5,000 cargo, and what else? Is this pretty much it?
