The main problem is traffic , especially I-95 . Then you have high fuel prices east of N.J. . Add to that anti-idling laws and scarcity of parking spaces . Parking in many rest areas was designed for 45' trailers years ago .
GAPrincess, panhandlepat and Texas-Nana Thank this. -
Think of it this way...
100 years ago, Houston, Los Angeles, Seattle, Sacto, Denver,...etc were barely on the map. 100 years ago, NYC, Boston, Philly,...etc were big cities. Sure, there are now superhighways and interstates and whatnot, but when you get off the bigroad, you run into little towns and roadways designed 100 years ago!!! You roll in a truck thats bigger than anything that road was designed for a daycab and a 45 ft trailer as Mr RickG brought out and its 2 lane traffic. Heavy traffic. Need to make a right turn? Theres a pole on the corner, building 4 feet off the sidewalk, cars parked on both sides of the street and about 10 ft of space left. No, its not impossible to make a turn...but add into this turn the 3 hour battle to drive 25 miles, the restricted roads, the tolls(for o/os), the old factory with the docks for truck trailer combos that were 20 feet shorter than any rig on the road today...
And you figure out that you can make easier money elsewhere.Texas-Nana Thanks this. -
Exactly what Rick said- dont forget many docks were dsigned for 45's as well. No where to wait for your load. Cops love giving tickets. Any north of Baltimore MD is a pain. If you go there it's all about timing, get in with pleny of HOS and get out.
Texas-Nana Thanks this. -
You know what Duck, I forgot about that. You get unloaded, and dispatch says, "standby." Uh-oh...
Was at the Petro in Joplin,Mo waiting to get a tire changed. A bullhauler was waiting also. The difference between us was that I was sitting in the waiting area and the bullhauler was driving around the parkinglot continually because the cows wanted to lay down. Thats the feeling I get when in New England the dispatcher says "Standby where you are at...I will get back with you." My response usually is, "I will be standing by in Pa."halfburn Thanks this. -
Thanks to all.
