BUYING A TRUCK FROM PENSKE

I've wondered the same thing. There are some threads on here that have mentioned penske having great maintenance programs on their lease trucks. So there is that. But I've also heard stories about how some people treat leased trucks. It would be nice to hear from someone who has bought one and can shed some light on the subject.

I drove for Lily a little over a year, never mind they had Ryder, just remember there rental trucks make sure everything works before you drive it off, because after you leave the driveway and it breakes your get to keep both halves.... Companies tend to push the routine maintenance on the rentals more than the company trucks. Its more up to the company that leases them then Penske or Ryder, they will both fix them when they get there hands on the truck. Paccar used to come out to Lily and pickup the tractor for the maintenance.

 

My first truck was a penske. No real issues.

They keep great maintenance records. And you probably can get them down 10% on the price.

 

When I got towed after my Ryder cab died I asked the tow driver whether Penske was more reliable than Ryder. He said he tows about the same of each, mostly derates.

 

Keep an eye out at the auctions, lots of ex Penske trucks sold there, I’ve bought a number of them and typically they are pretty good on maintenance history. Not to say the trucks haven’t been worked hard, but you know at least they have a decent service history. If you find one, and it still has the unit number call your local Penske dealer and they should give you a print out of the service history.

 

I bought my current trailer from them, It was supposedly marked down, best deal I could find at the time. Offered $1000 less, they took offer no counter, I should have gone lower. Lol. The repairs in roof, 8 total, Lol, it was an automotive trailer. Repairs were done very well. No leaks, thankfully. They’re maintenance seems to be good. Offer low, you can always go up. Give it a while, till they call You. Markets dropping now. They know it.

 

I drove Penske trucks for a few years when I did local work about 4 years ago. They were maintained well with on time PMs and fixed everything I wrote up.

As for rentals being driven harder than company trucks, I doubt it. Maybe for rental cars. A company driver is going to be hard on a truck wether it’s rental or company owned equally since he doesn’t own both.

 

My Penske truck is the opposite. They service it regularly, but writeups are hit and miss. I've had various warning lights come up, they reset the codes, or order a part, and that's it. Never want it back to install said part, and when it's due for service again, they have to reorder the part. Warning lights are still on. Radio cuts in and out, loses the display, it needs a new one installed. Been writing it up every time over the last 3 years, still in there.
