I took my physical this week prior to starting school Monday. I was concerned about my BP being in range because I had high BP before. I was able to correct it then and only be on meds for about three months. However, I've since gotten back out of shape.

I was relieved that I tested at 128/88 and believed that would get me a two year card. However, the doctor (no my primary because I don't yet have a primary) said that she had to give me a one year card despite the reading because I disclosed a prior diagnosis. Moreover, she said that once I have a history of BP issues I will ALWAYS get a one year card regardless of my reading!

To me this is total B.S:biggrin_25510:. My prior diagnosis was a short-term event over five years ago and I tested within normal range. Unfortunately I had little choice but to accept the card in order to start school. Now I have two questions:

1: When I begin soliciting different carriers to pre-hire me during my schooling (and I guess more importantly, when I make it to orientation) will I be discriminated against by some companies because I have a one year card? 1b: Will my 1yr card make companies be more concerned about my large size (350+) than they would be if I had a two year card?

2: Am I safe getting a second physical before applying for my permit? I don't believe my temporary high BP 5 years ago is relevant if I currently test within range and I will just leave my prior diagnosis off my medical history given what the doc said. However, I don't know what information has already been reported to the DOT or other authorities or data services like DAC.

Any knowledgeable insight would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

When you go to a company don't mention the history of BB when you take your physical especially if it was that long ago, and you have been cleared by you normal physician.. If you had issues, but were not on meds, then they don't need to know.. I'm on BB pills so I get only a 1yr card..

You will not be discriminated against for getting a one year card. If you are on BP medication you will automatically get a one year card. That's just the way the reg is set up.

Members have mentioned being rejected at orientation because their BP was over 140/90 and they couldn't get a 2 year card .

Just away for companies to weed out the future problem drivers.. In other words, having a driver will perfect health compared to one with a little issue like BB, will keep the insurance premiums down.

    RickG Thanks this.

That's very true . My employer has very low turnover so the average age of drivers is probably late 40's . When drivers have health problems the boss does all he can for them instead of finding an excuse to get rid of them . As a result health insurance costs have risen considerably with some companies refusing to even consider us .

I have seen a few companies that say must be able to obtain a 2 yr medical card. I don't think there are too many though. i would say it might be more of a concern or issue if it was a company that you had to do all or alot of your own unloading maybe.

No , they're just too cheap to pay for the physical every year instead of every 2 years . Medication can correct the blood pressure problem but once you've been on medication you will always have a 1 year card .

Not really too sure about that.

I have taken no blood pressure medicine since 2006. I have not seen a doctor since 2006.

My blood pressure is normal and within range.

Since, I have to complete the form and it asks for history in the past, I list it. I have been to 3 different company doctors and they have all listed me to a 1 year card.

We have a driver that is in his late 70's healthy as a horse and just started on BB medication.. This guy collects SSI, has a excellent retirement check every month from his last job. I asked him how come he still words. His answer is if he stops he might die LOL... Besides he enjoys working, and nothing will stop him...
