Sure wish I qualified for this but I am working so....I did find a community college offering the class though. The college close to me (about 30 min) had to discontinue their class due to funding issues so I will be attending one 2 hours away and living with a relative. We went to one of the schools you mentioned Truckerjo and then spoke to the community college. Wow what a difference; the first just wanted to push certain companies on us and tell us how much we could make (cost of $6000) the college just gave us general information. I will be starting in July!!

I got a WIA grant which paid $3000 of the $4000 the class cost. Sadly the school I wen to is not recognized by ANY OTR company. Not one will touch me and I have a SQUEAKY clean record, no tickets, DUI, arrest, anything. Do yourself a favor and go to a school that is approved by some big companies, otherwise you will just have a very expensive drivers license.

Man, that's a shame you didn't follow your own advice. Everyone do yourself a favor and make sure the school you choose is PTDI certified. I believe that a PTDI certified school is recognized throughout the industry. Might cost a little more, but you won't be throwing your money away.

If you only made 6845 over the 6 months, you will be lucky if you make that the first 6 months going OTR. Do yourself a favor, try and find a local driveing job or something other then truck driveing. This is a real bad time to get into this line of work.

Seriously? I have heard getting picked up by a good company, you can start out at .39 a mile?

Do you still think it is a bad time to get into trucking?

Don't bet on it.. Most who make that kind of money, have driven for a few yrs... Most start new drivers out at around 24-26 cents per mile..

I would really like to know where you can come out of school and get .39 cpm. Heck I will head there myself, I would make at least .55 cpm at a place like that lol.
Ain't going to happen in the real world. I am sure that there may be one or two places that will pay that. But they are rare. Most places will not give you .39 cpm without at least 2 years exp.

I have never heard of a WIA grant, but I have had my license since 1991 or 92 (never can remember lol).
The school I went to offered pell grants and all other student loans, same as college. But to offer those grants the school has to be accredited. Takes allot of work to get and maintain accreditation.

I guess I was one of the Lucky ones that was able to Qualify for the WIA program, added to the fact that the school I'm going to will only take me a month to complete, and they have a very low student to trainer ratio (4 students / trainer) They have a 97% placement average and 84% of the students placed last year are still with the same company they went to work for.
