Yes they are all junk...... the fleets put 3-400 thousand miles on them and don’t do any maintenance that isn’t absolutely necessary......then they dump them.
You need a 14 or newer with as low miles/hours as possible
Are all these used emission trucks Junk ?

Get a 2016 or 2017 Mack, MP8 engine, and then you will have a real truck.

California allows 2008 or newer. But their southern california ports requires 2014 model trucks. This was just enforced in the past few months. Many of our company loads out of CA going eastbound are at the ports.
I was raised and lived in CA all my life and moved out 12 years ago. Now I am back because my wife got a decent job in CA. She should get 100k+ in a year as an employee with good health and other benifits for our family. As an owner operator It is very expensive to get even crappy health care. Wife's health benefits would of cost us $2,000+ a month. All we pay now is $180/month health insurance and $10 co-pay per visit for my family while her employer pays thousands for this benifit. -
My truck has 118,000 miles and I am popping emission codes.
So yes, any used CARB compliant truck is a roll of the dice. -
