This will be the first time going to michigan and I want to run across the Upper Pennisula as I am going from Montana to northern Michigan. I was wondering if Hwy 2 across the UP is a good road and also what the toll on the mackinac bridge is? I was also wondering if there are any special procedures or restrictions to crossing the bridge with a truck? I will be legal size and weights. Thanks in advance for any info you can give me.

Yes its a good highway, im not sure on the toll but i think it was around $15 a few years back. There really is no truck restrictions in MI as long as you stick to state highways.

I just crossed that way about a month back, I think the toll is still $15 but really can't remember
make sure you have plenty of fuel as truck stops are few and far between up there
    enjoy the scenery

Depending on where your destination is it may still be quicker, and safer (in winter) to stick to the big roads and go south of the lakes.

Once you hit Mn you are in lake country which can be pretty busy with tourists, and you have to slow right down for small towns and its like that most the way across.

As was mentioned prior you really have to plan your trip as there are not a lot of places to stop which you will be able to get back out out of easily....

Go across in a snowstorm and this is kind of a big deal :(

I will agree that is scenic, but not worth it when looking at all the negative aspects of the trip!

yeah highway 2 going across the up is a good road been up there a few times. An yeah they got good food right there in St Ignace at the truck stop before you go over the bridge. Last time I went over the mackinac bridge it was 15 bucks and the truck speed limit was like 20 or 25 and you have to have the four ways on going over it. Did see lots of cops working the bridge pullin over speeders. Very nice area over there, if you got time jump on a ferry to mackinac island while your up there pretty neat place.

It's a pretty drive up there, I'd rather take it even in the winter than deal with the Chicago drivers. I can't wait to head up there for a fishing trip this summer. The toll is $3.50/axle. Max truck speed is 20MPH. Don't go over that--you'll wish you hadn't. I'd rather avoid the restaurant by the bridge. There's a truck stop maybe 2 hours west on US-2 that's pretty good. It's been a while, but someone will know the city.

2 hours west, you're probably talking about the 66 at Rapid River. I haven't eaten in the restaurant but the they sell greasy but tasty pizza by the slice and really good chicken by the piece up front.

The Mackinac bridge is down to one lane each way right now so the 4 wheelers really love getting behind a 20 mile an hour truck for near 5 miles :).
