I went to school in Jersey City, NJ and although the campus was fenced in, the dorms weren't always safe. :biggrin_25510: I've had my 4D Mag Lite since college (well over 15 years ago). Depending upon where I lived it's always either under my pillow or under the bed within arms reach. :yes2557:

  4. I like a good 4 watt single LED flashlight, they are hard to find but work well.
For self protection a big 3 or 4 cell mag flashlight works great too. For even better protection there is a flashlight with two stun gun electrodes sticking out through the lens.

I have a mag lite for spot lighting (like checking if the jaws are shut on the king pin) and I have an LED headlamp.

The headlamp is my all purpose light, leaving both hands free. This is essential when getting the pins to release on trailer tandems, sweeping a trailer in the dark, etc.

I put gloves on and slap the tires with the palm of my hand. Nothing like getting a real feel for the tires and how they reverberate from the slap against my hand. Learned that trick from an old salt about 30 years ago and stuck with it. The added advantage is that if you place your hand on tires when you have been running for a while and take a break you can feel how hot they are getting. I've been able to get forewarning of potential problems with tire pressure when a tire gets hot, then double check the air pressure with a gauge.
