I was really surprised to find these. I really don’t need them, but for the price, they were hard to pass up.

Garage sales, and marketplace, I don't mind buying a nonworking radio, dont mind repairing them, I basicly put them back to legal tune, if I can get the receiver to hear say around .6 or .7 thats as good as a cb receiver gets. I always set the tx up for key low talk high is the way I describe it, I like a dead key around .5 watts, the tune for max clean audio swing, and back off just a tad. I always use a scope for tuning audio, and my spectrum analyzer to check the tranmit, just to make sure it as clean as it can be.
There are debates I stay out of here like coax length, but it does amaze me that some of the smartest radio people here are not correct, size does matter, it all goes into, well never mind ramblings of a driver sitting wheil being loaded....

You know craig, there is no one answer.

You can get the best range with a radio taped to the mirror mount and a three foot jumper to the antenna on one truck but on another it wouldn't work at all.

The best explanation came from some engineer type guy who I met a while back, he said "RF is an unpredictable creature, sometimes it works with you and other times it will try your sole down to your bones."

I have had occasion when unable to get a radio antenna to tune, that I have fairly good results from playing with coax enght, and other times when it seemed to make no difference at all. On the commercial side back in the Motorola days , Always cuti it to length leaving enough for future repairs but not enough to act like a choke.

I've come to believe that except maybe for an NGP set-up, if you need to adjust the length of the coax in order to achieve an acceptable SWR, you got a problem somewhere, and the coax-length factor is masking it.

Kind of like using a tuner to gain resonance.

But, sometimes, changing the length of the coax might be the easiest way to get 'er done and get on down the road.

Ya, it’s that dang Velocity Factor’s fault.... we all would be better off if they would have not ever invented that theory, lol.

Oh I agree, has to do with a lot of things, just dont want to start that here because there's definitely 2 camps, almost as opposed as liberals and conservatives, not quite but close.
