New to the forums here but have been reading for a couple weeks now. I live in Charleston,SC where like everwhere else the job market has went to crap and forced to live off unemployment. I was laid off over a year ago and have thus far been unable to find a job. I grew up on Allied vans and worked as a warehouse manager for a moving company as well as being a mover there for couple years(3). Before that I was a first mate and later skipper of a longline swordboat, so I know all about being away from home and loved ones. I recently got my license back, was suspended back in November of 04(suspension was up in early 05), Was for a speeding ticket on my motorcycle. I can't afford school and frankly have heard way to many horror stories about them. My question is do you think I'de be employable in the transportation industry? I have a couple simple possession of marijuana charges from when I was still wet behind the ears(close to 9 years ago) I served me suspension on the license but lived right near wqork or was working on the boat so I didn't have a need for one, Kicking myself in the butt for not just getting it back moment suspension was up. At this point I have 5 kids who are getting rdy to starve cause the job market anyhow would it be worth it to tgry and get into a company training I mean any income is better than none right. Any advise you guys could offer would be greatly appreciated. Sorry to ask such a redundant question just seen ppl talking bout getting hired with felonys and such and haven't seen any posts to similiar to my situation. Thanks again and keep rollin

The problem with todays industry is that it's flooded with new drivers ready to go. The companies know this so they can be real selective. Just ask yourself if you had 5 applications in front of you and 4 of them have spotless records who would you pick? I'm not saying you don't have a chance but what I am saying is you have a battle on your hands to get hired.

Whatever you do do not believe what these recruiters tell you. Their job is to fill seats in the school and the schools job is to get your CDL. But just because you have a CDL does not mean you have a job. And once the school or company has your money or contract they've done their job.

Your best bet is to know someone that has a truck or in power at a small company. Let them train you to get your CDL and if a better job comes up later then maybe you could go to school so you could get that job. Besides, I'd rather be fishing anyway!

Thanx guys appreciate the comments. Than again as a former manager I was always willing to take a chance on someone who knows where the bttm of the barrel is. From my expierances they tend to bust thier ### to stay out from that spot. I won't let a few no's drive me off. I enjoy driving or boating always tried to keep a job that kept the scenery changing, just would perfer a scenery that does change the oceans all tend to look the same lol
